Marilena Matei

Managing Director Trafic Media

Marilena Matei (born 1972) is a publicist, journalist and owner of Trafic Media. The publishing house publishes the magazine Tranzit Logistica, which reports on Romania and the Republic of Moldova. Marilena has been a member of the IFOY AWARD jury since 2011.

Marilena studied journalism and communication sciences at the University of Bucharest. After graduating, she worked as a radio editor at a local Bucharest newspaper and then as editor-in-chief of two magazines – Util and Cargo.

In 2001, she founded Trafic Media, a publishing house with the Tranzit and Logistica brands. These media regularly analyze the transport and logistics markets and parcel service providers in Romania (Transport Market and TOP Romanian Transport & Logistics Operators) and are an important benchmark for the industry.

Tranzit also organizes transport and logistics conferences with a specialist audience of 300 to 800 people per event.

Marilena is also a judge for the International Trucks of the Year, Van of the Year, Trailer Innovation and Bus of the Year. She has also developed the Tranzit Awards for Efficiency in Transport and Logistics, which are presented annually during the Tranzit Gala events to the most efficient companies in the industry.

For me, innovation is not necessarily a completely new technology, which would be remarkable, but is not to be expected every year. Innovation also means adding value to existing technologies by creating a new, even better benefit by transforming a known technology or function into a more efficient solution. But a solution that does not require a high initial investment but delivers good savings and efficiency is also very valuable.

Interview

How important is sustainability in logistics?

Sustainability is becoming increasingly important. Solutions that reduce or eliminate waste are becoming a must. Electrically powered vehicles have long been available in warehouses, but everyone is looking for further solutions to save energy, resources and workload, because sustainability is not just about emissions, but also about people.

What trends do you see in logistics?

One trend that is becoming increasingly important in intralogistics is automation. Cameras and sensors are becoming cheaper and suppliers are coming up with numerous new solutions. Not all of them are valuable, but the more ideas and solutions there are, the more innovative solutions will come onto the market that will enable spectacular profits.

Is AI only interesting for corporations or will SMEs also benefit from it?

I even think that the use of AI will make automation more accessible to smaller companies. It is more of an investment in mindset than a financial investment. AI opens many doors and opportunities. AI makes the process simpler and cheaper. I therefore expect an enormous increase in efficiency in the coming years.
