Testing makes the difference. The paper form is one thing, but live testing can turn everything around. I have often experienced that the assessment of products is different after testing.

Interview

You invented the IFOY AWARD. How did that come about?

I believe that the most effective way to promote an industry, but also a company, is to demonstrate its performance and innovative strength. What better way to show this than through a professional competition? That’s why I wrote down the concept for a technology award.

Which evaluation criteria are particularly important to you?

The IFOY AWARD is first and foremost an innovation prize, so I look at the novelty value first. But a novelty is only an innovation if it succeeds on the market. To achieve this, the customer benefit must be convincing. That’s why the customer benefit is the acid test for every application. My consultants are also always very clear on this point.

How do you proceed with the assessment?

Reading applications, studying test reports, testing them myself, exchanging ideas with jury colleagues, talking to my advisors, voting and giving reasons. It’s quite demanding because the finalists are not compared with each other, but with their direct competitors on the market.

Is it true that the participants are not informed and only find out on stage whether they have won or not?

I get asked that all the time, and yes, it’s true.
