Exotec’s® Next Generation Skypod is a robot-based, all-in-one solution that, for the first time in the industry, integrates multiple functions into a single system where traditionally complex subsystems were required. Furthermore, it drastically improves storage density, picking efficiency, and overall performance, setting a new industry standard.

Stationary Robot / Robot Warehouse System

The Skypod is a robot-based, goods-to-person solution that has been developed into a compact, all-in-one system. It offers intermediate order buffering, strict sequencing, and both full-case and each picking – all within a single system without the need for complex subsystems. One could compare it to a “all-in-one kitchenmachine” for warehouses, eliminating the need for additional equipment while incorporating the most important functions into one system.
Within the AS/RS, fulfillment containers are transported entirely by Skypod robots, reducing single points of failure and offering additional capabilities for use, such as:
The main innovation is the integration of various functions into a single system that would normally require adding subsystems like conveyors or sorters to enable them.
Furthermore, the robots are smaller and can travel underneath the rack. This allows more robots to operate within the system, shortens travel times, and increases rack density up to a height of 14 meters.
It offers a 30 % increase in storage density, +50 % in picking efficiencies and can accommodate up to 2.5 x more robots per sqm which leads to a higher performance, more flexibility and will introduce a new standard in the industry.
The Next Generation All-in-One AS/RS offers density that exceeds most cube storage system and throughput that can match shuttle systems.
This all-in-one system seamlessly handles the following functions, requiring no extra hardware:
The Next Generation AS/RS is the answer to the volatile world of logistics with unstable supply chain processes and unpredictable forecasting.
The target group is companies operating warehouses designed for ecommerce fulfillment and/or store replenishment. Typically, these companies have complex supply chains requiring each and case picking, sophisticated sequencing for packing and shipping, high throughput and tough physical space constraints.
Concerning the market potential, Exotec can currently target the goods-to-person each picking solution market which has an estimated value of 9 billion EUR – with an annual compound growth rate of 15 % (source: Data & market analysis (MS, UBS, Jefferies), Interact analysis).
With the Next Generation, Exotec is expanding its target market to the entire goods-to-person value chain which is currently estimated at 42,3 billion EUR and expected to grow to approximately. 73.6 billion EUR by 2028 (source: Data & market analysis (MS, UBS, Jefferies), Interact analysis).
Set to officially launch next February, the Next Generation has already been installed, tested, and operationalized in several sites. The advantages are:
Exotec’s Next Generation Skypod System enables small load carriers to be transported from storage to picking with minimal media disruption. Sequencing can be performed at multiple points without any loss of performance. Due to the system’s ability to operate at great heights, extremely high storage density is achievable, even within standard industrial building dimensions. This is a highly refined advancement of Exotec’s well-known 3D shuttle concept, eliminating the need for additional lifts. The vehicles optimize the use of available space by maneuvering efficiently beneath the racking structure.
Overall, the Exotec Next Generation Skypod System, with its advanced robotics and modular architecture, represents an outstanding solution in warehouse automation. It combines cutting-edge technology with practical benefits, making it a valuable investment for forward-thinking logistics companies.
The already highly innovative Exotec system has been improved in multiple areas with the new generation of robots. The system´s core component is the newly designed robots, which are more compact and highly dynamic. Their redesigned structure enhances both storage density and maneuverability. As a result, the number of robots that can operate in parallel has increased significantly. Additionally, the ports and the strategy for travel paths leading to them have been redesigned, further optimizing sequencing efficiency.
The ability to perform multiple functions with a single system component, the robot, provides a wide range of advantages for the customer. These functions include horizontal movement, load transfer, vertical movement, sequencing, transport to picking stations and ergonomic positioning for optimized picking. This integration reduces handover points and media disruptions, leading to increased system availability, high storage density and exceptional efficiency in an enclosed process. Since sequencing can occur dynamically throughout transportation and within travel lanes leading to the ports, it remains highly flexible and does not require additional infrastructure.
Container storage and sequenced picking are no longer exclusive to e-commerce but are now essential elements of logistics operations across various industries. Particularly in existing facilities, achieving high density and flexibility is crucial for efficient integration. The Exotec Next Generation Skypod System delivers both, providing rapid and reliable access to a dynamic range of items even in high-bay warehouses. Additionally, in taller buildings, it enables extremely high storage density and maximizes space utilization. The system’s strong scalability is particularly beneficial in today’s volatile market conditions, allowing businesses to adapt efficiently and significantly reduce investment risks.
The Next Generation Skypod System is a well-targeted evolution of Exotec’s innovative approach. By maintaining the advantages of enclosed transport without load handovers, the robots have been further optimized, enhancing the system’s overall benefits.
