The Volume WAVE is the world’s first ultra-compact, fully automated pallet shuttle warehouse with individual access to storage places. The ultra-compact solution with overall heights between four and 40 metres convinces with a high storage density and is an alternative to automated storage and retrievalstacker crane systems as well as wide and narrow aisle warehouses. The space requirement is up to 40 percent less than conventional solutions.
Product name and company
Volume WAVE – Volume Lagersysteme GmbH

The Volume WAVE is a patented, automatic storage system for palletised goods. The ultra-compact solution with a high storage density is an alternative to stacker crane warehouses as well as wide and narrow aisle warehouses. The following features are significant:
Load height: up to 2.500 mm
The Volume WAVE is an alternative for automated warehouses with stacker cranes, but it is not comparable to existing solutions of other intralogistics providers or manufacturers, which are all basically similar. It is based on a fundamentally new design principle and has the potential to set new standards worldwide.
Customers with logistics tasks require high storage density, single place access and high throughput rates for storage systems for industrial and euro pallets. Each criterion on its own offers corresponding solutions, such as channel storage for high density, rack storage for single place access and stacker crane systems for high performance. Up to now, only single and double-deep storage and retrieval systems for pallets have met these requirements, but have reduced storage density due to the aisles.
Volume WAVE is the first system to meet all three criteria at the same time. It therefore represents a more compact alternative to warehouses with stacker cranes and is relevant for all companies that want to make maximum use of their space. Furthermore, it is a better choice for those who exclude a channel warehouse, as they also have to access individual pallets. Operators of wide-aisle or narrow-aisle warehouses want automated warehouses to reduce costs. Volume WAVE is also an alternative for them, with more capacity and more storage spaces.
The system can be used as a picking warehouse or replenishment warehouse. It can also be used as a sequence buffer for tour allocation. The low requirements in terms of area, height or floor space make it ideal for use in small halls in densely built structures (urban warehouse).
The Volume WAVE is the world’s first fully automated pallet shuttle warehouse with individual access to each storage location. This individual access is achieved by moving carriages in combination with integrated shuttle technology.
In this flowing storage process, each pallet in the system is placed on a kind of slide. This means that a channel can be cleared at any time and all pallets remain individually accessible. The shuttles (called “rovers” in this concept) travel fully autonomously on rails and pick up the pallets from above with a specially developed gripper. The pallet is then transported to the beginning of the channel, where it is handed over to the “ferry”, a transfer car that transports the pallets to one of the lifts and moves the rovers from one channel to the other.
Energy management has also been taken into account. The rover is equipped with supercaps that provide enough capacity to transport loads of 1.5 tonnes over a distance of 50 metres or more. During transport in the ferry, the rover is recharged.
One drive unit per channel is sufficient to power the sledges. Since all components work together seamlessly – and the sleds are never the bottleneck – a creep speed and thus minimal energy is sufficient. All drives, lifts and shuttles are equipped with a regenerative brake energy recovery system.
The patented, compact solution convinces with its high storage density. Compared to conventional solutions, up to 40 percent less space is required. For the first time, the system achieves a storage capacity that is comparable with channel storage systems.
The height of the solution ranges from four to 40 metres. The weight that can be stored per storage location is 1200 kg. The maximum loading height is 2500 millimetres. Volume WAVE is suitable for both Euro pallets and industrial pallets. Other pallet sizes are also possible on request.
For high availability, Volume WAVE is always delivered with at least two lifts. With two shuttles and four lifts, the system has a handling capacity of approximately 300 double plays per hour. This is comparable to the performance of an automatic crane warehouse.
The control of the system is self-learning. Depending on the workload or the priority of the orders, an energy-saving mode or a high-performance mode can be selected. Intelligent sensors continuously monitor the environment and prevent accidents and damage.
Volume WAVE can be integrated into existing buildings and adapted to special conditions. Thanks to the modular design and pre-assembled components, existing systems can be easily extended in length and width.
Volume WAVE combines for the first time all the essential criteria for a compact, yet flexible pallet storage system, from high storage density to high performance and individual access to each storage location. The system is based on a fundamentally new design principle and has the potential to set new standards worldwide.
The Volume WAVE system is an impressive solution to the classic problem of combining high storage density and high throughput in fully automated pallet storages with individual access to specific pallets. Even though not every storage system necessarily requires a high storage density, there is sufficient market volume for the Volume WAVE system to have good market relevance, especially in temperature-controlled warehouses, particularly in the area of deep-freeze storage, or where there is little available floor space.
On the one hand, the customer benefits from lower costs resulting from a smaller footprint, lower construction volume or lower operating costs. On the other hand, the higher storage volume on a given floor space with the need for individual accesses can also be decisive for the customer benefit.
The principle of storing goods in a mobile manner on simple trolleys at right angles to the direction of access to the individual locations is unique on the market and protected by a patent. The cost-effective and energy-efficient implementation for driving the transverse movement creates the basis for efficient individual access without stressing the operating device for storage and retrieval. Thus, the creation of the access opening is independent of the time availability of the operating device of the storage level. All in all, the system and the components are novel, innovative.
The functionality of the novel solution is very well elaborated and tested in a large demonstrator for its industrial applicability. The solution is already professionally implemented and designed in detail to overcome all known challenges in automated storage systems.
