The Hyster® J60XNL (J3.0XNL) integrated lithium ion forklift is the first counterbalance lift truck designed from the ground up to take advantage of the form factor of a lithium-ion battery pack. Compared to the traditional ‘box on wheels’ design, this provides several important benefits, including greater space in the operator compartment and lower center of gravity, improved ergonomics, confidence when entering and exiting the truck, and stability on long hauls and in corners – all with the fast, opportunity charging benefits of lithium-ion power.

Category
Counter Balanced Truck

The J60XNL (J3.0XNL) takes the efficiency, zero battery maintenance, power delivery, faster charging compared to lead-acid batteries and long battery life of lithium-ion power and brings it to a counterbalance lift truck, with considerable attention toward design, ergonomics and reduced total cost of operation. Opportunity charging and the ability to charge in approximately one hour, makes lithium-ion power an ideal solution for heavy-duty applications. The truck is also FDA compliant, with zero emissions in operation and no gassing required during the charging process, making it a strong choice for operations subject to high standards for hygiene, like food, beverage or pharmaceuticals.
Rather than a battery box replacement like other lithium-ion powered counterbalance trucks, the J60XNL (J3.0XNL) integrated lithium forklift does not follow a typical box on wheels design. Instead it takes advantage of the form factor of lithium-ion batteries to offer several advantages in relation to the equivalent electric truck designed for lead-acid batteries:
The lithium-ion battery also can communicate with the truck, instructing it to adjust performance based on operating temperature. This allows the J60XN integrated lithium-ion product to operate in a wider range of temperatures than other lithium-ion powered products.
The push for electrification is a priority across the forklift market, including markets food, beverage and pharmaceutical operations subject to high cleanliness standards, and as a result of green initiatives. Ergonomics is also a growing concern across the lift truck market, as companies deal with an increasingly scarce labor force, ergonomics can help companies to retain operators and maximize labor efficiency by fighting fatigue to keep operators focused and productive all shift long.
Faster, more flexible charging. End users can charge the integrated lithium truck in approximately one hour, whenever they have an opportunity – no need to go through complex processes to remove and/or maintain batteries in order to charge. In addition, the truck offers a much more spacious compartment to operators compared to a traditional lead-acid battery powered, box on wheels design, allowing them to get more comfortable and stave off fatigue, for greater productivity throughout the shift.
The truck also weighs over 318 kilograms less than the equivalent lead-acid battery powered model, offering improved acceleration and reduced energy consumption, to help limit total cost of operation.

The Hyster J60XNL is designed around the integrated lithium ion battery pack. The shape of the truck is therefore no longer dependent on a large, rectangular lead-acid battery. Benefits of this are obvious. Moving the center of gravity lower and further back improved the stability of the truck. The J60XNL lies more firmly on the road, especially when cornering.
In addition, there are of course the advantages of lithium-ion technology, such as faster charging and the possibility of opportunity charging of the maintenance free battery. Furthermore no specially adapted charging area is necessary for charging and changing batteries, while no harmful gases are released during the charging process.
Designing the truck around the lithium-ion battery pack also offers advantages for the driver, who, for example, has more foot space. In spite of the available extra space, the step on and off has not increased in size. A missed opportunity, according to the IFOY testers.
Lowering the floor plate and the position of the seat also results in as much as 88.9 mm extra headroom. Thanks to the gained space, Hyster was able to equip the truck with a full suspension seat for a more comfortable ride.
The lithium-ion battery also can communicate with the truck, instructing it to adjust performance based on operating temperature. This allows the J60XN to operate in a wider range of temperatures than other lithium-ion powered trucks, claims Hyster.
The overall truck weight was reduced by over 318 kilograms, compared to the equivalent lead-acid battery powered model. The weight reduction offers improved acceleration, manoeuvrability and reduced energy consumption. To maximise battery power, Hyster recommends turning off the lithium-ion battery when the truck is not in use. An additional on/off button is provided on the side of the truck for this purpose.
Different settings can be selected depending, among other things, on the operating conditions. First of all, regenerative braking can be adjusted. By default this is set to 60 percent. However, the IFOY test team achieves the best results with a setting of 80 percent. The truck then stops faster and changing driving direction costs less energy. For each mode four individual settings are available.
The default mode of the truck is ECO, which is sufficient for the vast majority of applications. Especially when driving in mode 4. Authorized users can also switch to High Performance. On the test truck, only the acceleration is changed. During the IFOY test the extremely rigid and solid mast stands out. Optimum upward visibility is somewhat obstructed by the protective roof, especially for the taller drivers.
IFOY Test Verdict:
The Hyster with integrated lithium-ion battery has a noticeably low centre of gravity and provides the driver with extra working space. The fact that Hyster has not taken advantage of the new technology to improve the getting on and off is seen by the test team as a missed opportunity. Performance in terms of both productivity and energy consumption is above average. The maintenance-free lithium-ion technology offers extra ease of use and the possibility to do intermediate charges without any problems.

In the 2.5 to 3.5 ton load capacity range, electric counterbalanced trucks are generally considered to be of high market relevance due to the possible replacement of diesel engines. This also applies to the good implementation of Hyster with an integrated Li-Ion battery, which enables an advantageous truck design. A solution with an integrated Li-Ion battery also has disadvantages. The advantages and disadvantages of an integrated solution can differ depending on the application and should be carefully considered, especially with counterbalance trucks.
The integrated Li-Ion battery provides a number of advantages for the Hyster J60XNL operator in terms of ergonomics and driving performance. The space gained offers considerable legroom and mobility for the operator at his workplace. An optional air-suspended comfort seat allows longer driving times to be completed with ease. If necessary, it is possible to get on and off quickly on both sides. The achieved reduction of the center of gravity position increases the dynamic stability and driving performance, which is directly noticeable during operation. Depending on the operational situation, these advantages can increase turnover rates.
The integration of Li-ion batteries is a novelty for the counterbalance truck in this performance class. As a result, the space conditions achieved for the operator are in part unique. The battery management system mentioned above, which also controls the performance depending on the temperature conditions, represents the state of the art and is a necessity for the efficient and safe operation of Li-Ion batteries.
The Hyster J60XNL appears robust and uncomplicated. The changes in driving behaviour are positively noticeable, as are the pleasant space conditions. The driver can act flexibly. The spatial freedom achieved offers further potential, which could be exploited through additional details.
