Description

he Jungheinrich EZS 7280 is a high-performance tow tractor with a particularly high towing capacity of 28 tons. In combination with its maximum speed of 25 km/h and the robust, anti-corrosion coated steel frame, it moves heavy loads safely and efficiently in outdoor areas, specifically for transport operations on airports, industrial sites or in logistics. Especially for applications with timed handling of loads, the EZS 7280 optimally increases customer value added thanks to its superior performance and drive characteristics. Various optional equipment – such as LED front lights, SE tyres, strobe and rotating lights or cruise control for long distances – enhance safety for driver and vehicle. In addition, the EZS is particularly strong on ramps: On a 10 percent slope, the tow tractor still retains a towing capacity of more than 10 tons. Thanks to the automatic parking brake and the hill-start assistant, stopping and starting on the ramp is always possible without any problems.

Market relevance

The EZS 7280 was developed to enable customers, who today still rely on IC-powered tow trucks and thus need to utilise large amounts of energy resources, to switch to a similarly powerful but electrically powered high-performance tow truck. This allows for more environmentally friendly, emission-free intralogistics operations.

The EZS 7280 is especially relevant for manufacturing businesses (industrial, specifically automotive) operating at airports or in airport logistics. Furthermore, the tow truck can be used by freight forwarding companies and in other industries, where heavy loads need to be transported horizontally.

The high level of efficiency can be reached among others by the fact that the truck has a tow capacity of 28 tons; the previous benchmark in the market was 25 tons. This means more goods can be transported per trip. Especially on ramps, the tow tractor is more powerful and also faster: it reaches higher speeds towing heavy loads than similar vehicles by the competition. Nevertheless, the EZS has the lowest energy consumption levels of its class. Efficiency can be further enhanced by using lithium-ion batteries, which enables fast interim charging especially in permanent operation – besides further benefits.

A broad range of optional equipment allows for even more efficiency and increased safety: The truck can be fitted with an automatic parking brake, which prevents the vehicle from rolling backwards when stopping on a ramp, whilst the hill-start assistant enables starting on ramps without rolling backwards.

Operations with the EZS 7280 are not only more efficient and safe, but also highly comfortable. The spacious cabin offers the largest footwell and headroom of any tow tractor of its kind. In addition, the cruise control system minimises the strain on the operator over long distances; and the optimised ventilating and heating system ensures working at pleasant temperatures with non-fogging windows.

Test report

With a pulling power of no less than 28 tons, the compact yet highly maneuverable Jungheinrich EZS 7280 – with a turning circle of 2.8 meters – is ideal for intensive use at airports and large manufacturing plants, such as in the automotive sector.

The heavy-duty tow tractor is equipped with a maintenance-free 80V/500A lithium-ion battery. On the outside of the tractor is a convenient charger that allows quick and easy charging without having to open the battery compartment cover. This enables trouble-free three-shift operation without replacing the batteries. A battery with a capacity of up to 930 Ah can also be used for extremely long times of operation.

In the two driving modes available, the user can choose between an optimal setting for longer distances, or a particularly powerful setting. If, for example, additional power is required for a short period of time in distance mode, the driver can use it at the push of a button. The driving speed is then automatically reduced to prevent constant driving in this power mode.

In both driving modes, the driver can also choose between three driving programs, which differ from each other by accelerations and travel speeds.

Especially in the case of large industrial plants, goods must be drawn on slopes regularly. Here, existing tow trucks usually have a residual pulling power of about 7.5 tons. The EZS 7280 offers significantly more pulling power due to the drive combined with its own weight (4 tons). For example, with a trailer load on ramps of up to 10 tons, one additional trailer can be towed per ride, so that a smaller fleet is sufficient. In addition, the higher tare weight of 4 tons is advantageous in that a higher load can be towed at airports.

The EZS 7280 offers a good view of the trailer coupling, both through the rear window (and the slanted rear wall) and the mirrors. Fine positioning is achieved simply by means of two large push buttons on the rear of the chassis. As soon as one of the buttons is pressed, a bright working light turns on. This ensures good visibility under all circumstances.

Various couplings are available for different applications or specific customer needs. The automatic parking brake, which is not a standard feature in this market segment, prevents the tow tractor from rolling back unintentionally on ramps. The additional hill assist ensures that it does not roll back when restarting on the slope. The slightly oversized brake and an anti-slip system ensure safe operation by distributing the forces to the axles as required so that the tractor always has optimum traction.

Driving comfort is also taken into account. The cabin is higher and offers a spacious entrance. The space in the cabin is sufficient and the footwell is generously dimensioned. The two seats are positioned so that the driver’s seat is optimized. For instance, there is more space for the left arm (which used to be too close to the side window). Both the seats and the steering column can be adjusted to the driver’s and passenger’s posture. A heater between legroom and window provides a pleasant climate and a good view through the windshield (also at both corners). The tractor is even equipped with a cruise control for longer distances.

If the windshield is damaged during harsh work, it can be replaced quickly and easily thanks to the screw system.

The Jungheinrich EZS 7280 is a strong and smooth-running tow tractor with a very compact turning radius. The available power provides high speed, both with and without load, and can be easily converted into additional tractive force. The cabin is spacious and offers a comfortable workplace with excellent all-round visibility. The view of the drawbar is good and the coupling is easy and safe to implement. The construction of the tractor is solid and suitable for use in harsh conditions. The lithium-ion battery ensures trouble-free operation due to the intermediate charges.
