easyPILOT Follow is a new remote operation solution for the Jungheinrich ECE order picker: The vehicle connects to the operator’s control bar via NFC pairing. It automatically follows this one person’s every move forward and stops, as soon as he stops. This way, the operator has both hands free for order picking. With maximum efficiency, intuitive operation and a safe connection, easyPILOT Follow allows for optimised order-picking processes to reach maximum picking performance.

Special of the Year

easyPILOT Follow is an additional, easy-to-retrofit remote operation option for the ECE, which is specifically designed for order picking goods on up to three roller containers or pallets in distribution centres, wholesale warehouses or in retail.
Thanks to semi-automatically controlling the ECE using easyPILOT Follow, our customers take another step towards automation: in manual operation, the operator is required to frequently step on and off the vehicle and make many trips from the picking place to the vehicle and back. In contrast, easyPILOT Follow enables the operator to move the ECE to the next picking place without boarding the vehicle.
Fitted with state-of-the-art laser scanners, the ECE scans the area in front of the vehicle, which ensures its safe navigation and positioning in the aisle. Operator and truck can move independently of one another. An external remote control is not necessary. Instead, the vehicle just follows its operator at a certain distance and halts, so that the operator can place the picked goods in the same position on the forks. Thus, the ECE is at the right place at the right time and the operator can completely focus on the order-picking process. This way, the employee’s day-to-day workload is reduced, while productivity noticeably increases.
The most significant innovation featured in easyPILOT Follow is its revolutionary technology for operator tracking. Whilst other manufacturers employ optical systems, Jungheinrich uses radio technology. Per NFC pairing, the vehicle connects to only one control unit in the form of a control bar, which the operator can carry in his pocket or attach to his belt. Malfunctions due to optical obstacles or other disturbances cannot occur, as the connection between operator and vehicle is 100 percent reliable at all times. Once the operator starts moving, a travel command is activated and the ECE follows its operator automatically. If the operator stops, the truck comes to a halt, so that the forks are in the same position as before. Thus, he can continue to pick the current order without any disruptions.
easyPILOT Follow enables effortless and fully automated switching between various operating modes, even without pushing a button. As soon as the operator leaves the platform, the vehicle starts following him. As an optional feature, an operator-specific side-orientation is available: Depending on which side the operator steps off the truck, the ECE automatically follows along the right or left racking.
ECE order pickers with easyPILOT Follow can easily be implemented in existing warehouses.
Especially when order picking, the interface between man and machine must function effectively. Therefore, easyPILOT Follow was developed to enhance the efficiency of these often fragmented and physically demanding order-picking processes and free the operator of unnecessary trips – by using this intuitive and easy-to-retrofit tool.
With easyPILOT Follow for the ECE order picker, Jungheinrich now launches a new solution in the market, which operates without any errors and can easily be retrofitted. For more dynamic and worry-free order picking operations.
According to Jungheinrich, with easyPILOT Follow, the ECE is the first semi-automatic order-picking truck on the market that optimizes picking performance with reliable technology, and is suitable for all vehicle variants at an attractive price. The easyPILOT Follow system is suitable for the entire ECE series, including scissor lift trucks, and can also be supplied as a retrofit for trucks already in use.
ECE is the market leader in order pickers. As early as 2015, Jungheinrich introduced the remote-control system, which, according to Jungheinrich, will increase productivity by more than 30 percent. easyPILOT Follow goes one step further, especially in terms of user-friendliness.
easyPILOT Follow is a semi-automatic solution that allows the ECE to automatically follow its operator. The operator carries the control unit either in the trouser or jacket pocket or at the belt, and the system automatically connects the remote control to the vehicle. The user can thus fully concentrate on the picking process.
The desired stopping point for the pallets or roll containers can easily be selected by a single push on the button of the remote control. This position can be easily changed during the picking process. The stacker always stops at the position specified by the order picker. Ideally, the remote control truck should come to a halt at the picking station at the same time as the operator, so that the order picker only has to turn around to place the picked goods on the pallet or in the container. During the IFOY Test, the ECE shows that easyPILOT Follow comes very close to this ideal situation.
Thanks to UWB radio technology, there is always a 100 percent reliable connection between the order picker and the forklift truck, regardless of optical obstacles or other interfering sources. Safety is ensured by two scanners on the front of the forklift truck, with one of the two scanners also handling the navigation.
The IFOY Test data confirm an optimized pick performance. Firstly, because the order picker has both hands free. On the other hand, the time-consuming ascent and descent between two consecutive picks is no longer necessary. The measured savings correspond to previous measurements with the manual remote control. However, the easyPILOT Follow is much more comfortable and easy to use. It is also possible to change sides in the aisle without any problems. The system locates exactly where the order picker is located.
Within the system, the testers see optimization possibilities for fine-tuning the speed and accuracy of the wireless UWB technology. In this way, the truck could arrive at the right place faster and avoid waiting seconds. According to the test team, ECE sets standards in terms of workplace and processing.
With the easyPILOT Follow, Jungheinrich provides a useful addition to its product range in order to achieve efficient and pleasant picking performance. The order picker has both hands free and can fully concentrate on picking. The truck follows him or her very closely and the system is easy to operate. The savings resulting from walking along can be found in almost every layout of the standard test setup. The closer the picks follow each other, the greater the efficiency gains. ECE offers a particularly pleasant workplace and is designed with great attention to detail.

The use of industrial trucks as a horizontal order pickers is widespread in the retail sector and thus represents an important category for manufacturers of industrial trucks. Jungheinrich’s ECE 225 is already widely utilized in this sector. The supplementary technical equipment, referred to as “easyPILOT Follow”, with positioning and safety system along with automatic drive control relative to the position of the user is evaluated here. In the test, the combination of vehicle and control system demonstrated a well-defined customer benefit, in that the market relevance of the “easyPILOT Follow” can be assessed as high. Ultimately, the economic efficiency and the potential for error avoidance during order picking will determine whether the principle of the autonomously following industrial truck for horizontal order picking will prevail.
The technical implementation of ECE 225’s automatic drive control with “easyPILOT Follow” offers a high level of customer benefit, for it provides various functions such as changing aisle sides, stopping and automatic following of the industrial truck as well as the infinitely variable positioning relative to the operator that the operator can order to the vehicle intuitively with a simple remote control.
Like with other similar concepts, employees are relieved of the workload during order picking, instead of driving the vehicle repeatedly, they are also able to focus on the order picking process. The expectation of a reduction of error rates is complemented by a reduced physical strain on the operators. Since the devices do not require any infrastructure, they can be easily integrated into existing systems.
Several variants for remote control and automation of floor conveyors for horizontal order picking are already available on the market. The design of the system for locating the operator, the user interface with remote control and visual display of the vehicle’s function as well as the functions described above represent important and relevant developmental steps, and together they may definitely be described as an innovation within this market segment.
In addition to the previously mentioned functions, the method of implementation proved to be very robust and reliable in the tests. In terms of operation, the main feature is its intuitive operation, which is well supported by a simple optical marking through four lamps in the vehicle.
