The Crown WAV 60 Work Assist Vehicle, better known as the Wave®, offers innovative features to help achieve a greater level of safety, efficiency and flexibility for applications where ladders are typically used to reach up to five metres, usually found in retail and manufacturing settings. The Wave is ideal for workers receiving, shipping and stocking small loads or products in busy, confined spaces, as well as order picking and order fulfilment. It can travel and lift simultaneously, so operators can move efficiently around a facility while raising and lowering to the appropriate heights in one smooth, seamless operation.
The Wave’s AC drive motors and controls increase travel speeds to 8 km/h and provide more responsive acceleration and manoeuvrability. The on-board Access 123 control system enables optimum performance and control through intelligent coordination of operator prompts, lift/lower operations, steering and braking, performance levels and other vehicle systems. Furthermore, the Crown Wave helps to reduce the risk of injury and accidents associated with activities such as lifting, climbing and carrying. It enables operators to handle their everyday tasks with confidence.
The Wave load tray supports up to 90 kg, while the load deck holds up to 115 kg. An optional, powered load tray features infinitely variable positions that allow operators to easily make height adjustments for flexibility with any load.

New maintenance-free AC motors and the eGen braking system offer simultaneous travel and lift functionality with increased travel speeds up to 8 km/h. Operators can move around a facility while raising or lowering to the appropriate heights and the travel speed is adjusted based on lift height.
The proven on-board Access 123 comprehensive system control monitors and controls vehicle functions and provides the operator with feedback for safe and reliable performance. The system offers an intuitive display, event codes, prompting operator messages, fully adjustable performance levels and advanced diagnostics.
Crown’s Four-Point Safety System is designed to ensure safety for Wave operators and bystanders:
Interlocked gates must be closed to raise or lower the platform. Full speed travel requires gates be open to allow an unobstructed exit in the event of an emergency. Travel speed is reduced when the gates are closed.
Safety sensors below the platform disable raise, lower and travel functions if someone or something applies pressure to the motor cover located below the platform.
Hand sensors ensure the operator has both hands on the controls. If either hand is removed travel is automatically reduced to creep speed (disengageable).
Dual foot pedals include sensors to ensure the operator has both feet properly positioned on the platform. The Wave automatically stops travel and lift/lower functions if either foot is removed.
Crown recognised that many manufacturing companies, wholesalers and distribution centres, large and small, had to deal with hundreds, even thousands, of small parts, assemblies and packages in both full and broken carton quantities. These companies had a lot in common:
This knowledge caused Crown to shift our development towards a more universal and exceptionally safe tool that would assist anyone that had a manual task to perform at elevation, and from this came the thought of a “work assist vehicle”, the Wave.
Today, the Wave is a unique and maintenance-free tool which can be found in various customer applications around the globe. With the new WAV 60 Series, introduced in May 2016, Crown included efficient and state-of-the art motor technology, comprehensive control systems and an extensive safety package to this robust and proven vehicle to meet the increasing market demands in terms of productivity, longevity and operator protection. The maintenance-free battery can be charged at any standard power outlet.
The Wave is an intuitive productivity tool that enables one person to efficiently and safely do the work of two. It dramatically accelerates and changes the way work is accomplished, eliminating time-consuming ups and downs, and minimising the risks of using ladders. With its compact footprint, it can work in confined spaces where workers move short and long distances. It’s also proven in environments where small loads are handled in receiving, shipping and put-away, such as retail and manufacturing applications. The lightweight Wave easily navigates 80 cm doorways, lifts, narrow corners and tight spaces. An optional rail guidance system reduces required aisle width to 90 cm to deliver highest density picking applications.
Carrying items up and down a ladder can be a dangerous task. According to the European Statistics on Accidents at Work, approximately 145,000 injuries leading to four or more days of absence were due to falls from height. The Wave enables operators to work with confidence. Its systems of protection and control start the moment the operator turns the key. A security check verifies all safety devices are functioning properly before the vehicle will start up. It then coordinates functional displays, manages lift/lower operations, controls travel speeds, steering and braking, so the operator can focus on the task at hand.
The Wave’s success formula is: Labour is cut in half + Lost time expense reduction + Product damage reduction = Operational cost savings.
Every year, around 145,000 accidents are reported due to the use of ladders in Europe alone. In addition, ladders are sometimes difficult to manoeuver in a logistics environment – and also offer little in the way of productivity.
Crown launched the Wave 50 back in 1997 as an alternative to unsafe ladders. What was then a noteworthy newcomer was updated last year and is this year competing for an IFOY Award.
The new Wave, officially called the WAV 60, was overhauled in multiple areas and equipped with AC technology. Among other things, this maintenance-free technology permits higher speeds where this is desired and possible in the location in question. The top speed was increased by 33 percent from 6 km/h to 8 km/h. Like its predecessor, the machine can simultaneously move and lift, and this ensures efficient and productive deployment.
Another new feature is the Access123 system, also used in other Crown trucks. Alongside a range of information for the user, the system also offers additional safety features, such as activation of the alarm.
Like the AC drive motor, the batteries are maintenance-free. In addition, Crown also uses a lot more steel in the new Wave, and this prolongs the machine’s service life.
The IFOY Test vehicle was equipped with the also new, optional electric load tray lift. The load tray has a maximum load capacity of 90 kg and is available with a range of additional inlays which offer adequate options for the order picking of smaller objects. The Crown WAV 60 can carry and transport an additional 130 kg on the bottom load platform.
The eGen braking system is also new. This regenerative braking system ensures practically wear-free braking (with the exception of the parking and emergency brake).
The test vehicle was equipped with an integrated charger (optional) and the “Work Assist” package, which includes additional storage compartments and LED lights.
The Crown WAV 60 is an extremely practical alternative to mobile ladders. Operation of the machine and the high-level safety features takes some getting used to but after some practice, working with the wave is extremely pleasant. The machine is quiet, runs smoothly and represents a safe option for shelf filling or other work activities at heights of almost five metres.

The WAV 60 multi-functional vehicle from Crown is a member of a still young class of material handling vehicles that are increasingly used above all in the retail sector and in order-picking zones. These kinds of machines have become the norm for occasional use in DIY markets, where vertical order pickers are not cost-efficient and the use of a ladder is not ergonomically desirable. The market relevance for these target groups is rated as high, while the overall market relevance is categorised as medium.
The WAV 60 allows the operator to reach loads at heights of up to 5 m and to then transport these loads, rendering ladders unnecessary. The strain on the driver is significantly reduced, and the work cycles are also far shorter due to the high speed and enhanced safety. Work efficiency is improved, as there is no need for a second person to secure the work process.
Thanks to its robust design, the machine requires less maintenance and has a longer service life than the predecessor model. A stepless speed limiter additionally reduces cycle time when the WAV 60 has to be driven with raised platform.
The multi-functional WAV 60 is a systematic further development of the WAV 50 with an AC drive concept that makes for lower maintenance frequency and improved performance data. AC drive motors have been the standard in the field of warehouse technology for a number of years now. The AC motors in this vehicle category are an innovation, however, as these specific vehicle types normally use DC motors.
A further innovation is the more intelligent safety system that steplessly reduces the speed in dependence on the lifting height and that ensures adequate stability coupled with better performance. New operating elements additionally improve interaction with the machine. On the whole, the WAV 60 represents more of a systematic evolution than a revolution.
The WAV 60 makes a solid and robust impression, and its development was geared towards long service life and minimum maintenance requirements.
