EPH 125 DTFV

UniCarriers Europe

The new EPH 125 has now become the new flagship model for the extremes of 12,1 meters order picking height. With the introduction of the EPH 125, UniCarriers now completes a full order picking range.

The EPH is the result of an extensive investigation of customer requirements. They request a design suitable for free range operations but also high lift in rail or wire guided aisles. Previous guided aisle high lift order picking was only possible with expensive Kombi machines. Now it is possible to pick from 12,100 mm without crippling the budget.

Equipped with 48-volt high-performance motor, the EPH is suitable especially for intensive operations. The current industry trend has been to build to a capacity suitable for Euro pallets with a depth of 800mm. This allows trucks to be built and rated at 400 mm load centre.
UniCarriers supplies materials handling equipment to a world-wide user base and many outside mainland Europe operate with load depths of 1000mm and 1200mm. Therefore to provide maximum flexibility and maximum lift capacity the EPH is rated 1250kg at 600mm load centre.
Building equipment to such a height specification causes installation problems due to the height of the truck mast. To overcome this we created a special delivery system high lift trucks mean high mast height.
The mast is folded back and entry to the site through low doorways is via a semi-remote control drive unit. This saves time, money and is the safest method.

Description

Innovations

Market trend is for higher lifting reach trucks and therefore higher levels of order picking. Four years ago the maximum height was at eight to nine meters. The project ambition was to create a 10.5 m platform height providing 12.1 m picking. The result is an improved performance in comparison with former models as well a with competitors. 1250 kg capacity at 600 mm load centre means plus 200 mm compared with the competitors.

The cabin as the operators’ office should be equipped in an appropriate way. For this reason the EPH provides more space for all types of optional equipment, like writing desk, computer terminal, pens and sticky tape, bar code scanners, picking lists or pick labels.

Intense operations need high ergonomics and high levels of comfort. For this reason the EPH also provides a softer platform floor, dampened lowering, adjustable controls and adjustable seat to fit all operators. The controls can be adjusted on either the fork or mast side or both sides.
Instead of a dead-man function a floor presence sensor recognizes an operator is on the truck. This means a much more comfortable position for the operator.
A high-effective picking process on the first storage level is guaranteed by the pro access gates. And finally the truck design with its clear view masts provides an 360 degrees visibility.

Market relevance

The last years has seen an increasing demand to provide order pickers up to 12,000 mm. In addition capacity at 600mm load centre is essential for a global market.
It is vital that any truck elevating operators to these heights operates so safely, smoothly and quickly without sudden movements or surprises. To the operator, total confidence is vital and confidence promotes good performance.

For safety reasons the truck may not be operated without the operator standing on the platform. For this reason the platform is a presence sensor which will allow truck operation once the presence sensor is activated. To ensure this safety method is always functioning, at first daily switch on the drivers must move their feet to the edges of the platform and then back to the centre. This allows the sensor to calibrate and allow operation, otherwise the truck will not function.

For smooth movements the lift, lower and drive functions are speed controllable by the operator. Finally the last part of the cabin lowering is dampened for smoothness.
As far as driving and lifting is concerned it is possible to do both when in rail or wire guided aisles. Once a guidance is recognised the operator can drive and lift at the same time. The stability of the EPH is such that high speeds are maintained at high levels. This speed is however weight related. Speeds reduce as weight increases and increase as weight reduces.
In addition to all the above UniCarriers set the goal for a higher lifting heavier duty machine than the former OPS model and all the competitors.

Customer benefits

levels, previously unattainable and without by reducing the load centre to 400mm, which compromises capacity.
Pallets around the world are 800, 1,000 and 1,200 deep so 600mm load centre is the most flexible for loads up to 1,200 mm deep.
Picking at such heights must be done with same efficiency as at lower levels. The EPH speed performance at height, combined with the safety at height allows UniCarriers customers to achieve this level of efficiency.
Order picking is time consuming and the most labour intensive of all the materials handling functions. The efficient utilization of people, time and equipment is paramount.
By utilizing available height we can be more efficient with the utilization of space. This reduces time required for order picking by reducing travel distances and minimizes warehouse storage costs. When order picking in guided aisles it is difficult to pick from ground level if the safety gates have to be constantly raised and lowered.
The standard EPH is fitted with safety gates that do not have to be closed until a platform height of 1200 mm is reached. This speeds up picking from ground level. Once elevation reaches 1200 mm then the safety gates must be closed otherwise the truck will not function.
The time saved per pick at every ground level averages three seconds. Where labour is intensive and time is money this singular function contributes to performance and the lowering of costs.

Test report

The EPH 125 is the latest high lift order picker from UniCarriers. With order picking heights of up to 12.1 metres, the newcomer reaches higher than ever before and therefore caters to the ever-increasing demands of the market.

The machine can lift loads of 1,250 kg and has a load centre of 600 mm. The residual capacity at maximum lifting height is evidently lower, however. In the IFOY test truck, this was 900 kg at a lifting height of 11,150 mm.

The operator of the order picker has an excellent view in all directions. The workplace is comfortable, spacious and equipped with a sufficient number of storage compartments. Both control units can be tilted (not steplessly), and the overall control console can be adjusted to suit the height of the driver.

During the IFOY Test Days, the EPH 125 proved itself to be extremely easy and pleasing to steer. The truck is a smooth runner and is far faster than its predecessor. UniCarriers has succeeded in increasing driving speeds by 42 percent, while lifting and lowering speeds are up by 68 percent and 13 percent, respectively. In addition, the maximum driving speed is automatically adjusted to suit the load weight on the forks.

Whenever a lifting height of over roughly one metre is reached, the driving speed in open spaces in automatically reduced for safety reasons.

Operation of the hydraulic functions is highly responsive, but there is no mast damping feature at maximum lifting height. The test team experienced the latter as unpleasant. The test team also believes that the Plexiglas screen should be more robustly mounted so that it does not rattle during transport.

Note: during the IFOY Test, it was not possible to fully test the vehicle without the induction wire or side rail guides.

IFOY test verdict

The UniCarriers EPH 125 DTFV is a fast, flexible order picker for higher picking zones. The stacker is quiet, stable and easy to manoeuvre. Driving comfort can be described as satisfactory, also due to the DPS platform.

IFOY Innovation Check

Market Relevance

The EPH 125 DTFV high lift order picker is the new flagship machine from UniCarriers and permits picking heights of 12.1 m. The development process for this machine also included an increased load distance, thereby allowing the transport of large and heavy objects such as furniture.

Trucks in this vehicle class are widely used for order picking and can also be used for pallet transport in the warehouse and the pre-storage area. On the whole, market relevance can be rated as “medium”.

Customer Benefit

The greater picking height makes for more efficient use of the warehouse space. Compared to an order picking forklift, which allows lateral removal of an entire pallet from the shelf, the high lift order picker from Unicarriers is a lower-priced solution, but an order picking forklift achieves considerably greater heights. The performance data of the EPH have been significantly improved, and this can result in reduced cycle time.

The machine is fitted with a Pro-Access gate for the first storage level, which means that the safety bar does not necessarily have to be closed in the lower position of the cabin. This makes it easier to exit the vehicle for picking from the bottom level and hence saves time.

Degree of Novelty

The EPH 125 DTFV is a systematic further development of the model range with the emphasis on increased picking height. The performance data of the machine have also been improved.

A floor panel with sensors in place of a dead man switch enhances working comfort, but similar solutions already exist in other vehicles. One novelty is the Pro Access gate system, which improves picking ergonomics on the first warehouse level.

Functionality / Type of Implementation

The high lift order picker is professionally designed and offers good operating ergonomy. Adjustment of the various control elements is quick and easy. The sensor in the driver platform ensures a comfortable standing position for the operator.
