Description

The new Still high lift pallet truck EXV-SF 16i is an efficient as well as economic electric warehouse truck for loads up to 2.0 t. It is a pedestrian and stand-on high lift pallet truck with a stand-on platform that is designed for usage in pedestrian operation in very narrow environments and for stand-on operation to cover long transport distances. This ensures high flexibility of the application. Furthermore, a high turnover performance is guaranteed as the high lift pallet truck combines the critical success factors compactness, power, precision, ergonomics, safety and environmental responsibility in a unique manner. The air-suspended stand-on platform or the patented load capacity indicator are just two features that confirm this fact. Already today, this truck answers the questions that will be posed in the future, regarding the megatrends in logistics. An example for this is the trend to urbanization and the respective challenge of short space. The EXV-SF with a very high residual capacity counters this effect. Also, the challenges of globalization, with more and more nationalities working together thus increasing the number of spoken languages, are conquered by the EXV-SF with a colour display which shows operator information and warning messages in a language neutral manner. With the EXV-SF, new standards are set to easily overcome the challenges of tomorrow.

Innovations

To maximize warehouse efficiency the operator of the EXV-SF series can draw on seven USPs. Starting with the unique, individually adjustable air-suspended stand-on platform which ensures more comfortable work and keeps strain off the driver’s back. Therefore, the user can work relaxed and concentrated over a longer period of time and accidents are prevented. Moreover, the EXV-SF is fitted with the unique STILL combi-tiller to increase the safety distance in pedestrian operation. The tiller can be folded out and, through the larger safety distance, the feet are distinctively more protected. Warehouse safety is also improved by the coloured and patented load capacity indicator. This is reasonable regarding the highest residual values in the market. With the load capacity indicator the operator has full control of storage height and the respective residual capacity at all times. The height-adjustable side guards are unique in the market and contribute to personal safety, even in case of different body heights. Safety is also offered by the innovative display and control unit. In a language-neutral manner it indicates whether the side guards need to be folded up at given lift heights or whether the initial lift needs to be lowered for safety reasons. Different languages can be set to retrieve additional information. The EXV-SF is fitted with the Blue-Q energy saving mode that in addition reduces the energy consumption up to 7 % to account for environmental concerns.

Market relevance

The truck is designed as an overall concept to maximize handling capacity and to ensure a high level of safety for employees at the same time: high efficiency.
A pneumatically damped stand-on platform and the side guards guarantee safe work. The focus of development was the individual adjustability of the damping of the stand-on platform and of the side guards so that small and tall as well as light and heavy persons are well protected alike. The combi-tiller, which ensures protection of the feet even in pedestrian operation, and the load capacity indicator, which ensures that the truck is always operated within its operational limits, are more safety features that only STILL has on offer.
With 10km/h driving speed, the EXV-SF is the fastest truck in the market. This is ascribed to the low maintenance rotary current drive and steering motors. To assess the efficiency of the machine and to increase its turnover performance, the truck possesses an automatic speed reduction in curves as well as adjustable maximum driving speeds to the lift height, to protect the user. The truck has the highest residual capacity which moreover leads to an increase in the storage density. As all machines with initial lift can move 2.0 t in horizontal transport, the performance is additionally improved. The EXV-SF can therefore be viewed as a synonym for high warehouse performance in combination with the ideal protection of employees.

Customer benefits

With the new EXV-SF the user achieves a turnover performance that is approximately 25 % higher than before. Nevertheless, he can work more relaxed and especially safer than with comparable trucks. The high turnover performance is easily reached by the EXV-SF as the machine can be operated intuitively, precisely and safely. Simultaneously it impresses with a high level of performance and high flexibility of application. It takes the economic principle and the safety of employees into account. The safety equipment protects the operator, but the protective functions do not affect the driver. In the best case the user does not even recognize that he is being protected. Only hereby the safety of employees and high turnover performances can be combined. Because of the unique ergonomic design, which keeps strain off the operator’s back, the user can work distinctively more relaxed. So the concentration can be maintained for a longer period of time. Thus expensive accidents are avoided. The most important thing though are not the costs, but the employees themselves. The sickness absence rate is reduced and the customer is on the safe side even with staff that is getting older due to the demographic change. The EXV-SF combines turnover performance and safety for the user. Every time the user deploys the EXV-SF he is provided with efficiency as the machine adapts to the user or to the application respectively and not the other way round. Only then you can speak about true efficiency.

Test report

Still launched its new stacker truck in the EXV series in early 2015. The machines have been improved in multiple ways and are fully in line with the modern-look “Still style”. Several new features make the compact and agile truck even more powerful, more accurate, safer and more ergonomic than its predecessor. The new stacker is available in pedestrian (EXV) and platform (EXV-SF) versions with a maximum lifting height of 5,402 mm. The platform version with a lifting height of 3,817 mm and a load capacity of up to 1.6 tonnes was the machine that underwent the IFOY test.

The Still EXV-SF is equipped with a powerful, low-maintenance threephase motor (2.3 kW) supplying maximum speeds of 8 km/h (under load) and 10 km/h (no load). This means the EXV-SF models are among the fastest stacker trucks on the market.

The air-cushioned platform dampens vibrations and jolts that can harm the body and provides a safe and comfortable workplace for the operator. In the view of the test team, the function for setting the pneumatic suspension system could be slightly more practical. The platform can be adapted to suit the height of the operator, which above all provides improved back protection during travel. The lateral protection devices are also individually adjustable. In order to ensure safe cornering, the stackers in the EXV-SF series are equipped with “Curve Speed Control”. This feature automatically reduces the speed when cornering.

The stackers are equipped as standard with an operator platform and an articulated tiller ensuring reliable straight-ahead motion at a speed of 10 km/h. The centrally located tiller and the optimised handle design make handling equally easy for both right and left-handers, and operation is highly intuitive thanks to the ergonomically designed control elements.

The lifting and lowering speeds have been increased compared to the predecessor model in order to achieve higher productivity and efficiency during storage and removal operations at height. The 3.2-kW lifting motor can lift loads at a speed of around 0.16 m/s, while the maximum no-load speed is 0.30 m/s. During lowering, the stacker truck records a top speed as high as 0.40 m/s. Exact lift and lower control combined with integrated mast cushioning ensures smooth, jolt-free vertical movement of goods.

The residual load capacity of the new stacker truck is among the best in its class: the EXV-SF with triple mast can move 730 kg at a lifting height of 5,402 mm. At a height of 4,802 mm, residual load capacity is still a healthy 880 kg.

A bright colour display shows all the relevant information such as battery status or driving mode at a glance. Alongside the “Boost” programme (for maximum power) and “ECO” (for energy-saving operation), Still now also equips the high lifter as standard with the Blue-Q energy optimisation system. According to the manufacturer, Blue-Q paves the way for energy savings of up to 7 percent at the press of a button and without loss of power.

In the IFOY test, the Still EXV-SF had problems with the slippery flooring in the hall. This had a negative impact on the test performance relative to floors with a greater degree of grip. Nevertheless, the EXV-SF still scored better on average than other test vehicles, primarily due to the higher driving speed and the lower average energy consumption. The electric power steering is a pleasant feature, and the lifting height indicator on the mast is eminently practical.

IFOY test verdict

The STILL EXV-SF is a practical vehicle which is easy to operate. The steering is light and responsive, and the machine boasts above-average power. The articulated tiller also makes the high lifter suitable for use as a pedestrian truck.

IFOY Innovation Check

Market Relevance

The nominated EXV-SF 16i from Still is an electric stand-on high-lifter forklift with a fold down platform and the stipulated sidebars. One of the uses of the machines in this class is when the operator has to manoeuver in narrow environments and folds up the stand-on platform for this purpose. Or, with the platform folded down, the machine can travel over medium distances at speeds of over 6 km/h (limit for pedestrian mode). Together with the slimline vehicle contours, the front-to-end equipment levels of this truck ensure small turning circles and good manoeuvrability. This is why these trucks are used for tasks ranging from delivery truck unloading to shelf storage. The applications of transshipment and warehouse storage account for a large share of the market for MHE vehicles, and there are many suppliers in this segment. Overall, the market relevance of this type of truck can therefore be described as good.

Customer Benefit

The explicit customer benefit of the EXV-SF 16i is its focus on the operator, who can boost his productivity by using the combination tiller to perform travel motion in the permitted speed range in each case while working in the optimum work zone: with reduced speed and short drawbar when moving at speed on the folded-down stand-on platform or when manoeuvring with extended tiller from a safe distance in tight spaces. In addition, the color-coded load capacity indicator (patented) helps the operator to quickly find his bearings during the lifting process, and the height-adjustable side protection bars facilitate rapid yet always safe operation of the machine.

The nominated EXV-SF 16i also brings the familiar Still concepts of the “fleet manager” and the Blue-Q energy-saving mode to the table, although both concepts are already used in other models. They also guarantee an implicit customer benefit, however, in the form of the uniformity of the said functions within the context of a fleet from the same manufacturer. Overall, the customer benefit is to be described as high, as the functions geared towards performance satisfaction and safety have been well implemented.

Degree of Novelty / Innovation

The degree of innovation of the EXV-SF 16i is moderate, as it only comprises minor developmental steps; first and foremost, the colour marking and gradation of the residual load capacity on the mast – which can be a good customer benefit in some cases but which does not represent a far-reaching innovation. The combination tiller, on the other hand, has been used in Still trucks for some time now. The adjustability of the side bars is without doubt an important feature for tall operators but is more of a design optimisation.

Functionality / Type of Implementation

In purely technological terms, the aforementioned improvements and functions have been well implemented. The targeted and sophisticated connection of the fork tips to the fork carriage is one of the features that catches the eye; and the compact design of the lifting function provides a good view through to the mast from the operating position at the tiller.
