The Still Ergopick is a horizontal order picker CX-S 16 with a vacuum lifter mounted on a boom from Schmalz. A pump generates the suction force electrically so that load weights up to 40 kg can be lifted securely and easily. The “S” in the name of the machine stands for scissor lift. This device enables the lifting of two pallets to a height of 785 mm to make sure that all work can be steadily carried out at the best ergonomic height.
The mobile boom can be used flexibly for a range of operations. Conventional picking of heavy items in the warehouse like packages, bags, paint buckets, barrels, suitcases or small load carriers are no problem.
Handling bulky goods often requires more than one person. With suitable suction tools (vacuum or mechanic grippers) even bulky goods can be handled ergonomically by a single person.
In assembly lines the Ergopick can be deployed to load and move goods and can therefore replace or complement fixed cranes.
Handling and palletizing of goods is often managed centrally. The mobility of the Ergopick enables to palletise goods directly at the storage location avoiding additional transport of goods.
In brief: The Still Ergopick ensures flexible, ergonomic and economic handling of heavy or bulky goods in various operations.
The CX-S 16 is additionally equipped with a vacuum operating unit that comprises a vacuum pump, a boom and a vacuum lifter from Schmalz. For high availability the machine is fitted with an efficient, low-energy and electric maintenance free rotary current motor. As a result the battery capacity is sufficient for one shift not requiring to change the battery.
The crane unit is fundamental for the security, the range and the ergonomics of the movements. These requirements are met by a stable and smooth-running scissor boom with flexible range and ergonomic handling. The scissor boom is equipped with an electronic position sensor which ensures that the boom is always kept within the contour of the truck to prevent the risk of collision when the truck is moving.
The CX-S 16 can be positioned by driving at creep speed, also if the boom is slightly extended. The reach covers a range of 2.1 m at an operating radius of 270° around the truck.
The flexible vacuum lifter system with its one-finger control can be fitted with different grippers or tools. Tools can be changed user-friendly due to an integrated quick change adapter that enables a quick and efficient handling of various attachments adapting the device to different types of goods.
As a result the CX-S 16 represents a new possibility of handling heavy and bulky goods in an efficient and ergonomic manner.
The goal of the product development was to simplify handling of heavy and bulky goods for the operator. Furthermore, handling load weights of up to 40 kg at a crane range of 2.1 m leads to high safety requirements regarding the use of the Still Ergopick.
These requirements are fulfilled by electronic crosschecks and easy operating principles. Contact sensors ensure that the boom is positioned within the truck’s contour. Only if this is ensured, the truck can drive and a collision of the boom with a rack or another truck is avoided. As a result, the truck is only released to drive if the boom is securely locked. Deploying different hose diameters ensures that the load is securely held by the suction gripper in every possible situation. All loads are let down slowly and securely even if, for example, the vacuum generation fails.
With a boom reach of 2.1 m high stability is imperative. This is achieved by the battery as well as by the weight of the truck. Additionally, the truck underwent several tests regarding its stability. In addition to its flexibility of use and meeting all ergonomic requirements, the Ergopick delivers a high level of security in dealing with heavy loads.
The customer benefits from different aspects of the Ergopick. With the support in lifting loads of up to 40 kg the use of the Ergopick physically relieves the employee.
In general, the handling of goods in everyday work for the employees is improved and most important of all made easier.
Applying a vacuum lifter to a mobile order picker provides the customer with a crane station which is highly flexible. With one battery as an energy source the high flexibility in the use is reached and a lifting of heavy workpieces is possible, even without a stationary crane. In that way heavy or bulky goods can be moved ergonomically.
The one-finger control allows, besides the precise handling of the loads, to quickly change the different suction or mechanical grippers. So the tool or gripper can be changed quickly and easily. As a consequence, work tasks with varying goods can be managed.
Moving loads weighing up to 40 kg, requires a high level of security in using the device. When driving the truck it is guaranteed that the boom is always inside the truck contours. Furthermore, a “falling off” of the goods is not possible. Therefore the Still Ergopick is more than safe in its use.
All these benefits enable a physically relieved, flexible and safe handling of bulky and heavy goods.
With the Ergopick, Still offers a flexible and ergonomically designed solution for handling heavy and bulky goods in various areas.
The Still Ergopick is based on the CX-S 16 horizontal order picker and has been fitted with a lifting arm complete with vacuum lifter from the Schmaltz company to ensure ergonomic handling. With this add-on device, the machine can pick heavy and bulky items efficiently and with minimum physical strain on the operator.
With the Ergopick, all manner of containers, such as crates, buckets, sacks or barrels weighing up to 40 kilos can be easily and safety lifted by a single person. The flexible hose system is controlled by one finger and allows the use of multiple grippers. The integrated fast-change adapter makes for easy and quick changeover between the various gripper mechanisms. Operation of the vacuum lifter takes some getting used to but will be soon intuitive after regular use.
The lifting arm has a reach of 2.1 metres and a range of 230 degrees around the truck. Thanks to the scissor lift mechanism, two pallets can be simultaneously lifted to a convenient working height of 785 mm. The mobility of the Still Ergopick permits palletisation of goods directly at the order picking point, rendering additional transports and handling routines unnecessary.
When developing the Ergopick, Still focused on safety. The lifting arm has an electronic position detector, for example, to ensure that it always remains within the contours of the vehicle during travel and there is therefore no risk of collision. If the scissor arm is not in the safe position, the vehicle will not move. During order picking, the CX-S can be inched and exactly positioned at reduced speed and with slightly extended arm via buttons on the side of the machine.
The Still Ergopick offers a solution for companies who, as a result of the ever-stricter legislation in many countries, need an ergonomic solution and/or want to minimise health risks. After a period of familiarisation, the system is more productive than manual handling, particularly where a high number of goods have to be moved frequently and the number of order picking stations is not too high. Employee fatigue then no longer plays a role. In addition, the system avoids the absence of personnel due to excessive physical strain resulting from the handling of heavy loads.
During the test, it became clear that the operator has to become accustomed to this system. In this connection, alternative solutions for the suspension and fixing of the hose for the vacuum grippers could make the system more user-friendly. Dosing of the vacuum power via the pistol grip requires a sensitive touch and takes some getting used to. The power behind the vacuum system is impressive. The CX-S order picker did not undergo testing.
In collaboration with the Schmalz company, Still supplies a solution for handling heavy products during the order picking process. The system is a high-performance system and serves a wide working area around the order picking truck. Operating convenience could be improved, particularly with regard to the suspension and securing of the hose and the lifting arm. The system appears to be too cumbersome for order picking at a high number of different stations.

The Still Ergopick is a special materials handling device designed to master a very common handling challenge. The order picking of packages, boxes, small load carriers, buckets or sacks from storage units onto a guided order picking pallet is a frequent task. During their shifts, order pickers are often in unfavourable positions and postures, and suffer in particular from the high cumulative strain of frequent lifting. Irrespective of the legal regulations or sometimes due to the sheer size of the picked objects, these tasks require two people where no technical support is available. The Still Ergopick solves this problem with a rotatable scissor lift mechanism, the position of which is monitored by switches and to the end of which a vacuum hose with a suction gripper is attached. The suction gripper is doubly secured during travel of the horizontal order picker (the hose is in a net, the gripper is locked in place). The gripping process is activated by a vacuum in the hose which presses the package firmly against the gripper before the vacuum in the hose pulls the scissor grippers together, supporting the lifting process by shortening their length. Overall, the market relevance of this machine can be described as very high, as there are many different applications and as social awareness for the issue of ergonomics is increasing all the time, not forgetting the common interest of users and employers to keep absence due to work-related strain as low as possible.
The explicit customer is due to the special property of the mounted unit on the materials handling truck that allows it to directly connect load pick-up via suction to the lifting function. This means that the load pick-up device with its reliable gripping action can be intuitively operated via just one switch for vacuum regulation. It takes some practice, however, to dose the vacuum power in such a way that the gripper contacts and sets down the loads smoothly. After enough practice, it is conceivable that the Ergopick can achieve picking speeds that are comparable – and in the longer term superior – to those possible with the manual handling process used today. What is certain is that it results in far less strain for the user. Overall, the customer benefit is to be rated as very high.
The technical idea of upgrading a series-produced machine using a mounted special-purpose device should be viewed above all against the backdrop of the integrated handling function with its major challenges in terms of mechanical stability and the supply of energy to the handling tool. This not fundamentally a new idea, but the combined vacuum lifter is a first and is a good solution. The design of the suspension of the scissor grippers also helps to ensure that the freedom of movement of the machine is not hindered by any long cantilever arms when travelling over longer distances.
In purely technological terms, the innovations and functions outlined above appear to be well implemented. During the functional test, however, it was evident that it in particular the release of the vacuum gripper from the transport suspension and the suction hose from the transport net (prevents the hose from sagging when the vacuum power is switched off) were awkward to perform. Even large persons had to stretch when doing this. The use of the vacuum gripper also requires some degree of practice but does get quicker as time goes by. The suction blower can clearly be heard. It may be a good idea to directly connect the suspension of hose and gripper with the blower switch. Overall, the functionality can be described as well implemented.
