Test report

Last year, Toyota Material Handling launched the BT Staxio with load capacities of up to 2 tonnes. The broad range of models in the series comprises no less than 11 basic machines featuring numerous options that allow adaptation to individual requirements.

The new stacker truck is the only one in its class with a maximum lifting height of 6 metres (using a triplex mast). The test vehicle was fitted with a duplex mast and achieves a maximum lifting height of 3.7 metres. The widened chassis measures 790 mm (60 mm more than its predecessor) and provides added stability. The lower chassis makes for a good view of the forks.

The lifting and lowering speed of the BT Staxio is higher than that of its predecessor and is one of the best in the segment. No-load lowering speed is as high as 0.45 m/s. Maximum lifting speed is 0.36 m/s, and the lifting motor is remarkably quiet. The driving speed of the BT Staxio of up to 10 km/h is also good.

An improved powertrack system provides higher residual capacity. The pressure on the spring-mounted drive wheel is dependent on the weight of the load, and an active hydraulic system measures the tilt angle of the vehicle via sensors. As soon as the angle exceeds 1.5 degrees, the drive wheel is fixed in place, thereby ensuring enhanced stability.

The stacker truck in the IFOY test was equipped with a 150-Ah/24-V lithium-ion battery. According to Toyota, this maintenance-free battery can be used for more than 17 percent longer than a conventional lead-acid battery with similar capacity. Toyota uses the lithium-ion technology as part of an “integrated system”. Stacker and battery communicate directly with each other, rendering additional systems unnecessary. In the event of unexpected problems, the stacker control system intervenes automatically and (for example) adjusts the speed of the stacker. When the battery reaches its minimum charge, the speed is reduced automatically. For the driver, this is a sign that the battery has to be connected to the charger.

Thanks to the Sensilift system, lifting and lowering is extremely responsive and proportional. The system itself is not new but it is now part of the standard equipment. As soon as the load reaches a height of 1.80 metres, the lifting action is automatically stopped, and “Gate” appears in the display to indicate that the side guard has to be folded (in line with the European regulations). The lifting process can then be continued.

The tiller is height-adjustable and can therefore be exactly adjusted to the height of the operator. The BT Staxio is equipped with a click-to-creep feature for precision manoeuvring in tight spaces. If the operator presses the drive button twice in quick succession, he can also work easily and safely with vertical tiller. The benefits of the “Optimised Truck Performance” (OTP) feature include curve control and power steering. This makes for a noticeably more pleasant drive and reliable straight-ahead travel.

The BT Staxio with lithium-ion battery has significantly more power and takes the stacker truck a step further than the model with the conventional battery. The test scores are far better than the average for the market. In addition, the stacker is extremely user-friendly and also makes for pleasingly smooth and quiet travel on uneven surfaces.

IFOY test verdict

With the BT Staxio with Li-Ion battery, Toyota has set the bar in the stacker truck segment considerably higher. The machine is easy to operate and full of safety features like the lifting height block with folded-down side supports or automatically lowering initial stroke of the support struts for safe lifting. The side supports are easy to fold up and down. The size of the stand-on platform sets the trend for other vehicles in this segment.

IFOY Innovation Check

Market Relevance

The nominated BT Staxio SPE 140L is an electric stand-on high-lifter forklift with fold-down operator platform. The side bars stipulated for safety reasons during fast horizontal travel can be operated with one hand should the driving situation require. One of the uses of the machines in this class is when the operator has to manoeuver in narrow environments and folds up the stand-on platform for this purpose. Or, with the platform folded down, the machine can travel over medium distances at speeds of over 6 km/h. Together with the slimline vehicle contours, the front-to-end equipment levels of this truck ensure small turning circles and good manoeuvrability. This is why these trucks are used for tasks ranging from delivery truck unloading to shelf storage. The applications of transshipment and warehouse storage account for a large share of the market for MHE vehicles, and there are many suppliers in this segment. For applications where the BT Staxio SPE 140L has to be operated in heavy-duty use over two consecutive shifts, the lithium-ion battery technology supplies a benefit that can be described as being very important for the market. Overall, the market relevance of this type of truck can therefore be described as good.

Customer Benefit

The explicit customer benefit of the BT Staxio SPE 140L is its focus on the operator – who can boost productivity rapidly by folding the side protection bars down and back up with one hand if this is necessary for higher stacking actions or manoeuvring in tight spaces before returning to horizontal travel mode. The nominated BT Staxio SPE 140L is of very slim design, ensuring not only manoeuvrability in tight areas but also an excellent view of the situation at the fork thanks to the mast and lifting device design. A further key benefit for the customer is the use of lithium-ion battery technology. The advantages for the user are greater flexibility, improved robustness during intermediate and fast charging (e.g. during breaks) as well as in multi-shift deployment, where replacement batteries are no longer necessary and the workload associated with battery change is no longer relevant. The battery technology also permits reutilisation of the energy generated by the vehicle. For the user, this translates into reduced energy consumption and improved deployment times, all of which adds up to a customer benefit that is to be described as “very good”.

Degree of Novelty

The degree of innovation of the BT Staxio SPE 140L is to be described as moderate, as the lithium-ion battery technology is already well-known and was introduced for the relevant applications some time ago. With its fitted battery type, the truck does not represent any level of far-reaching innovation for an electric stand-up high-lifter. Although one-hand operation of the side bars is without doubt a key functionality for effective working routines, this feature is already part of other models marketed by Toyota Material Handling.
