Description

Available in LPG from 2.0 to 3.5t, the new Tonero IC counterbalanced trucks with hydrostatic transmission complements the diesel range previously introduced by Toyota. The trucks boast unmatched stability thanks to the integrated Toyota System of Active Stability (SAS) and low centre of gravity, outstanding all-round visibility for increased material handling safety and high reliability granted by the Toyota Production System (TPS) manufacturing.
The Tonero HST has been created to respond to the market needs and places drivers in focus by offering a wider choice. It addresses the individual driving preferences. The trucks allow for quick change of direction when needed. Productivity is enhanced by the combination of powerful engine braking and acceleration, independent lift and drive functionality, and effortless load handling. Features such as stop-on-ramp, electrical parking brake and maintenance-free wet disk brakes are typically integrated into the 2.0-3.5t Tonero HST models. Furthermore, the trucks come with the complete SAS package; fork levelling, SAS swing lock cylinder, control of tilt speed and control of tilt angle, and synchronized steering.
In addition, the Tonero HST LPG drivers benefit from pre-set driving parameters that allow them to accelerate easily and safely with auto braking when needed. Last but not least, the engine, the heart of the truck, has been specifically built for industrial application purposes.

Innovations

The Tonero HST LPG 2.0-3.5t trucks have been built with a unique combination of hydrostatic transmission and SAS swing-lock cylinder. This gives the trucks an outstanding capacity for increasing productivity.
Another novelty is that these trucks are also equipped with constant drive speed functions. They allow the trucks to maintain a constant drive speed, depending on the position of the accelerator pedal and regardless of the floor conditions and hydraulic functions control.
The drive mode selector on the dashboard gives the driver the ability to easily adjust the acceleration and auto braking effect depending on application or personal preferences. The driver can also easily brake in daily applications without the need of using the mechanical brakes. In case of emergency, the brakes are sure to give a highly controllable, smooth and safe braking.
Toyota is also the only manufacturer to offer hydrostatic transmission with synchronized steering thanks to which the steering knob keeps a fixed position when driving straight.

Market relevance

The Tonero LPG 2.0-3.5t trucks with hydrostatic transmission are built for high level of driveability and reliability and make up a complete offer. The driver is in full control of the truck acceleration at all times as well as of the braking effect and driving speed which act independent of the lift functionality.
The trucks are capable of maintaining a constant driving speed depending on the position of the accelerator pedal and regardless of the floor conditions and hydraulic functions control.
These Tonero 2.0-3.5t HST models have been designed for high productivity and power and make no compromise when it comes to safety. The latter is enhanced thanks to their SAS features and perfect all-round visibility.

Customer benefits

The Tonero HST LPG 2.0-3.5t is an outstanding piece of industrial equipment for the drivers who prefer this kind of driving feel and comes with clear benefits in terms of productivity, ergonomics and safety. It helps customers personalise their material handling experience by giving them the freedom to choose this transmission because it suits them and their applications best.
It has been conceived to deliver maximum uptime even in the harshest conditions and lift productivity and efficiency to the next level. Toyota is the only manufacturer to design and develop its own industrial engines. Having full control over the entire production process in-house ensures high quality and exceptional efficiency of the engines and trucks. The Tonero HST LPG 2.0-3.5t benefits from this long engine-building experience and the Toyota trademark for quality, combining power with optimized fuel consumption and reduced Co2 emissions level.
The driver is less fatigued thanks to the Tonero HST’s ergonomic seats and seat mounted hydraulic controls. The steering knob of the small steering wheel remains in the same perfect position when driving straight. The powerful engine braking and acceleration are further assets for the HST drivers.
The Tonero HST LPG models are highly reliable and lead in terms of safety. With their maintenance free electrical parking brake and stop-on-ramp function and outstanding visibility, they make material handling a smooth and safe process both for driver and goods.

Test report

Two years ago, Toyota launched the Tonero HST as the long-awaited answer to the demand for a hydrostatically driven forklift. The hydrodynamic Tonero has already been on the market for a while, but the Tonero HST underlines the desire of the Japanese manufacturer to also play a role in the hydrostatic segment. The diesel forklift was subjected to the IFOY test last year; this time, it was the turn of the LPG variant.

The LPG truck is equipped with the Toyota-developed industrial engine (42 kW). The hydrostatic drive system was designed and built in cooperation with Bosch Rexroth.

Compared to the Tonero from the 2014 IFOY test, Toyota has further optimised the software system. Both acceleration and braking functions are more responsive, with the result that the forklift truck is far easier to handle.

In addition, the test truck had all the benefits of the SAS system which is fitted as standard to all Toyota forklifts. The associated functions are all present, such as horizontal fork levelling, controlled tilt speeds with a loaded fork and stabilisation of the rear axle. The synchronisation control system ensures that the wheel is always in the same position when the forklift truck is driving straight ahead.

According to the manufacturer, the combination of hydrostatic drive and SAS is also supposed to boost productivity. However, productivity remained below average for the truck segment during the IFOY test. Energy consumption was in line with the average values for the machine class.

One of the big advantages of hydrostats is the safe and easy change of direction, which is why the truck is mainly used for short-cycle tasks such as loading and unloading delivery trucks. The forklift is always safe on ramps thanks to the hydrostatic system.

The Tonero HST is equipped with a selector switch for three driving modes: Standard, Performance and High-Performance. In S mode, the truck behaves quite like a hydrodynamic machine, and the driver has to brake frequently. In P and above all in H mode, the truck brakes far more strongly via the hydrostatic system. The test team found P mode to be the most comfortable driving mode. The H driving program is for experienced drivers and mainly frequently reversing tasks.

The workplace in the Tonero is extremely spacious with ample foot, leg and shoulder room. The mast functions are predictable and visibility is good. The displays show all the important information, and even a weight indicator is standard: if the load on the fork exceeds the maximum limit, an acoustic warning tone is emitted.

The storage space is rather limited, with just one cup/bottle holder and two clips. Moreover, the compartment under the adjustable armrest is hard to reach.

IFOY test verdict

Toyota Material Handling has greatly improved the hydrostatic drive system since it was first launched. Handling of the forklift is predictable and responsive. The benefits of the hydrostatic transmission are particularly noticeable in the “P” and “H” modes. The SAS system, fitted as standard to all Toyotas, also enhances the performance of the Tonero HST.

IFOY Innovation Check

The Tonero HST LPG provides the option of combining well-known technologies like LPG drive with hydrostatic power transmission while taking full advantage of the SAS stability system.

The braking effect of the hydrostatic power transmission concept deserves particular mention, as it can now be adjusted and selected by the driver to suit his specific requirements and based on task assignments involving transport loads that are secured with varying degrees of efficiency. This makes day-to-day work activities easier and safer.

All in all, this vehicle represents a solid further development of existing vehicles of this class.
