Description

Tergo® is a range of five unique reach truck models in 8 capacities, one multi-directional reach truck for long load handling and a VNA truck that is as flexible as a reach truck.
The Tergo URS, which is based on the Tergo family, is a reach truck and VNA-truck in one model. It´s capacity is up to 1500 kg with lift heights to 10350 mm. Maximum storage capacity in the minimum of space, with maximum utilization of labor, it is the VNA truck with the lowest Total Cost of Ownership.
The Tergo® design is the result of an investigation of customer requirements, customers request a design suitable for VNA operations that also benefit from being a multi-purpose truck.
An ideal workplace eliminates fatigue and supports drivers to stay focused for their whole shift. The URS fits operators of all sizes and combined with a great ergonomic design it ensures an efficient and comfortable working day.
With driver settings linked to individual operator PIN codes or RFID cards, each, and every driver can have their own personal performance settings.
Novice drivers will perform safely at a speed suitable to their experience. As their experience grows they will be given new truck settings to maintain safety at the same time as improving performance to the maximum.
The URS is 85% Tergo®. This means all engineers carry the Tergo® parts in their mobile depot and all engineers have the knowledge and skill to provide excellent after care ensuring maximum up-time.
Current uptime levels are in excess of 96% when serviced from field based engineers and 98% with site based engineers.

Market relevance

A truck that is so manoeuvrable provides a maximum of cost effectiveness and flexibility for the user.
VNA operations require Feeder equipment to:

  • Put pallets into or take out from Pick up and Deposit areas (P & Ds)
  • Take pallets from P & Ds and put into or take out from VNA racks
  • The versatile UniCarriers URS does not require P&Ds and can do all of the above in one truck

Man-up VNA trucks require specialist service support. Specialists are often nationwide support and not local to the customer. For the Tergo URS is based on the Tergo family, it does not require specialist service support.The aftercare requirements are carried out by local service engineers. They have the parts, the expertise and the ability to provide customers with rapid response
The Tergo® has the most customizable driver’s cabin with a combination of 350 settings. Every part of the driver that comes into contact with the truck can be adjusted to best suit each individual.
Reach truck drivers intuitively feel at home with the URS.
The URS Ergologic joystick control is a standard fitted to all other Tergo® trucks.It is a familiar type of machine carrying out the duty of a VNA machine and a Reach truck.

Customer benefits

The URS provides 2 trucks for the price of one with maximum economical use of space, people and equipment.
The VNA principle is about utilization of space. VNA allows the same area of the warehouse to house up to 35% more storage which avoids building more or larger warehouses.
The overall handling efficiency of the warehouse system is a combination and balance of the three main cost resources: Space, 60-65%, Labor, 20-30%, Materials handling equipment, 5-10%.
Ironically the lowest of these three costs, (the fork lift) has the greatest influence on the overall economy of the whole system.
Using VNA means increasing the space utilisation to increase storage capacity or decrease the size of the warehouse. In either case we reduce the largest of the three costs, which is the space required for the warehousing system.
VNA trucks, in particular Man-up versions are so large they cannot travel easily throughout the building are therefore restricted to working and travelling in the main racking part of the warehouse. Other equipment and other drivers must bring products to and from the warehouse.
The VNA system with the UniCarriers URS truck, works without other feeder equipment and therefore without other drivers. The URS is so versatile and flexible that it can travel throughout the whole building and it is not restricted to the warehouse.
This gives the customers maximum space utilization with minimum of labor and costs.

Test report

UniCarriers launched the Tergo URS in the autumn of 2014. The VNA truck is based on the Tergo reach truck. Development work focused on ergonomic aspects, high service standards and minimum overall operating expenses. The Tergo URS is available with load capacities of 1,250 kg and 1,500 kg, and has a maximum lifting height of 10.35 m. The test truck had a lifting height of 8.55 m.

Entry to the UniCarriers Tergo URS is low, and exiting is always easy and safe. The cabin is equipped with a good seat with a slim backrest that enables the driver to turn with ease when reversing and that also has multiple adjustment features. The truck has a mini-steering wheel on the left armrest; a bigger steering wheel on the chassis is optional. The floor plate is height-adjustable (max. 70 mm), further enhancing the ergonomic properties of the URS.

Visibility has also been improved. The tie-bars are intelligently shaped and positioned, ensuring a good view of the load. The roof sections are angled and make for maximum upward visibility. It is conspicuous that only the front three sections are sloped. Mirrors are mounted on both sides of the mast for a good view of the blind spot.

The mast has been re-designed and provides good visibility, although it takes a little getting used to.

After the driver enters the PIN, the truck is ready to go and adapts to the individual settings of the driver. The new display shows the position of the driving wheel, the battery status and the parking brake indicator. The operating hours counter and clock are always easy to see.

The combination of vehicle type and floor conditions made it difficult to really put the Tergo URS through its paces, which is why the test team relied on its in-depth impressions. During travel, it is clearly apparent that the Tergo URS is extremely agile and easy to manoeuvre. This comes as no surprise, as the truck has the smallest turning circle in its class. The Dynamic Cornering Control (DCC) feature dynamically reduces the speed when cornering based on the driving speed and steering wheel angle, and this enhances driver and operating safety.

For change of driving direction, UniCarriers offers a choice between a combined pedal for speed and direction of travel called “HFDC” (Hands Free Direction Control) and a conventional button with thumb-controlled change of direction (and this was the option fitted to the test truck). This button is integrated in the standard Ergologic joystick. The hydraulic functions are easily predictable and can be dosed with a high level of precision. Fork rotation is extremely fast and smooth.

As the induction switch is on the outside in the new model, the truck is slightly longer than its predecessor and connects to the induction circuit more effectively. The vehicle handling characteristics are stable and reliable.

The Tergo URS is also available with one or two-sided rail guidance. The fact that it is not only induction-controlled but can also be operated as a free range truck is a major benefit.

The attachment is also new. There is now only one cylinder instead of two, and this ensures stable handling of larger pallets.

The battery lock is sensor-monitored. The test vehicle was fitted with the largest battery, the 775 Ah/48 V model. The Tergo URS reaches a maximum speed of 14 km/h and permits the driver to lift the forks while the truck is moving. It is also significantly more productive than its predecessor: according to the manufacturer, performance has been boosted by roughly 17 percent, and this is also due to the improved lifting speed.

IFOY test verdict

This two-in-one VNA reach truck from UniCarriers combines the advantages of high warehouse density with reduced handling needs. The truck sets a new benchmark in terms of ergonomics. The controls are extremely responsive and predictable.

IFOY Innovation Check

The TERGO URS is an example for the systematic combination of two truck classes with the aim of creating an alternative for warehouse operations and transport in the pre-storage zone, and comprises a reach truck together with the swivel traverse fork of a VNA truck. Both types of machine have been in widespread use individually and with great success for many years – as well as in combination in certain cases. The merging and optimisation of both systems in a single unit that meets modern market requirements in terms of efficiency and ergonomics represents a meaningful further development in this class of machine.

All in all, the TERGO URS is a well-designed vehicle with a coherent range of functions and a targeted equipment level adapted to everyday warehouse tasks. Overall, it represents the effective transfer and solid further development of existing technology and vehicle concepts.
