Description

With the RX 60-80 Still has reacted to an existing demand and extended its RX 60 range by an even more powerful truck series. The new RX 60 can lift up to eight tons. This compact power pack is easy to handle and extremely manoeuvrable. The maintenance free and capsulated drive with its lamella brake makes the 80 volt truck an ideal machine for combined indoor and outdoor applications.
The electric truck provides optimum turnover performance, because it combines the aspects compactness, power, precision, ergonomics, safety and environment in a unique manner.
This means: already today we are delivering a truck with the efficiency it will need in order to cope with tomorrow’s challenges. With this, customers can always rely on having the ideal trucks at hand to solve their intralogistics tasks.
The RX 60-80 electric forklift truck sets the standards for the interplay of all the characteristics that are relevant for optimum turnover – from now also when it comes to moving especially heavy loads with load centres of 900 mm.

Innovations

The RX 60-60 to -80 series extents the Still product range with outstandingly powerful and at the same time compact and manoeuvrable trucks.
The RX 60 is optimised to handle heavy and bulky loads and provides excellent visibility of the load and the surroundings. The cabin or the workspace for the driver, respectively, is placed left of the centre to provide optimum visibility around the left side of the mast. This creates a large field of vision left of the load. For the driver this means higher safety and fewer damages.
Efficient and safe storage and retrieval, also in high rack levels is made possible by the free visibility through the overhead guard. Large openings allow optimum upward and forward visibility for fast and safe work on the rack.
The workspace for the driver has been designed so that the driver finds all necessary information in his field of vision. The hydraulics are easy to control. The new hydraulic control, the Joystick 4Plus allows the driver to work even more comfortably and effortlessly.
A crucial success factor is the simple, fast and safe battery change over the side. This keeps the RX 60 ready for operation at all times around the clock – also in multi-shift operation.
The battery can be changed quickly and easily over the side. Changing the battery only takes three to four minutes. An overhead crane is not required.

Market relevance

The main goal for the big RX 60 were low operation costs. The costs for energy, maintenance and service are substantially lower than those of the respective diesel and LPG trucks of this class.
The development of the trucks also focussed on large drivers. Starting with a spacious and well visible access, as well as a functional design of the workspace with optimum adjustments for all controls including a large number of equipment options just as well as top values for body vibrations. All of these aspects increase comfort for the driver, offering optimum conditions for fatigue-free work preventing health issues.
Furthermore the dimensions of the truck were in the foreground during the development of the truck. With a length of less than 3500 mm and a width of under 2 m with twin tyres, the RX 60-80 has a turning radius of only three meters and can be operated in working aisles less than 5 m wide. This makes the RX 60-80 one of the most compact trucks of its class.

Customer benefits

The Still truck are fitted with a spacious and comfortable workspace implementing the latest findings in ergonomics.
The RX 60-80 does not only offer the driver maximum safety, but also a spacious and comfortable workspace which allows a relaxed and healthy body posture thorough the whole work day.
The cabin can be heated more efficiently and faster with an electric system than many competitor cabins. This is made possible by the smart design of the space, avoiding unnecessary, unused volume. Efficient heating reduces strain on the battery and extends the service time per battery recharge. The width of the cabin provides a number of additional benefits, for example the battery door which opens like a baggage compartment door on a coach, saving space when opening. When changing the battery, the door can not be damaged.
Changing the battery over the side means to save time, increase safety, reduce repair costs and avoid investment for new battery charging stations. A crane is not required to change the battery.
Due to its compact dimensions, the warehouse space can be made optimum use of reducing costs per storage bay.

Test report

Last year, STILL presented the new RX60 series with capacities of up to 8 tons. The most conspicuous features of the robust electric truck are its high seat and short overall length. The shape is due to the large on-board battery. The 1,240 Ah/80 V battery is the beating heart of the machine, and the driver sits right on top of it.

From the point of view of the driver, the seat and the space required for it result in several new aspects. The broader front axle with its double wheels is slightly wider than it appears at first sight. Above all, the area at the back of the truck is initially difficult to gauge, as the machine is extremely rounded. In addition, the driver’s cabin is slightly offset to the left. These are things the driver has to become accustomed to over the first few metres. Getting used to the RX60-80 takes no time at all, however. One major advantage for the driver is that Still has mounted a standard cabin on its trucks – with the same steering wheel, the same seat and armrest, and the same mast operating concept.

Getting to the driver’s seat is quite a climb, but it’s an easy one. The cabin floor at a height of 1,220 mm is quickly reached via three large and conveniently spaced steps. At an imperious seat height of over 1,700 mm, the driver of the RX60-80 reigns supreme over his surroundings. In terms of visibility and line of sight, the cabin poses very few problems thanks to its extremely large glazed areas and very slim columns. The view through and along the duplex 3,500 mm mast is also good. Due to the blind spot and the heavier fork carriage, the driver cannot see the fork tips across a distance of 72 cm up to a lift height of 2 metres.

During the IFOY test, the forklift was operated in drive modes 5 (Maximum) and 3 (Balanced), in both cases with and without the Blue-Q energy-saving button. The energy optimisation system reduces energy consumption by roughly 13.5 to 14 percent. Truck handling was slightly better without Blue-Q, but drivers who need to work with maximum precision and above all over a longer period of time can extract over an hour’s extra driving time from the battery in Blue-Q mode. Overall, the computed practical uptime is 6:33 hours in “Max.” mode 5, and 7:35 hours in mode 5 with Blue-Q. The score is negligibly higher in drive mode 3. Together with the predictable handling characteristics and the compact dimensions, these values make electric drive systems more than just worthy of consideration in the 8-ton class.

As the automatic brake on the motor is also predictable, the driver rarely has to apply the brakes but only has to take his foot off the gas. The lifting speeds are also standard for a forklift of this capacity and are adequately controlled based on the weight of the load. The Still RX60-80 is an extremely stable machine for all situations.

One new feature is the function on the display that continuously computes – and graphically displays – average consumption as well as a positive or negative trend. The values on the display were almost identical with those recorded during the IFOY test.

In addition, Still has updated and extended the side-on battery change function. From April 1, the supplier will be offering the option of using an electric lifting truck that is suitable for areas where space is at a premium. Connection and disconnection of the battery cables is extremely easy thanks to the lever layout. The latch on the bottom is no longer part of the chassis but is mounted on the housing, making it simple to replace in the event of wear. This is a major improvement, particularly with heavy-duty use and high risk of wear.

IFOY test verdict

The Still RX60-80 8-tonner is powerful and stable but handles like a 4 to 5-tonner. With this powerhouse, Still proves that electric drive is meanwhile a highly logical and recommendable alternative in the heavy-duty segment. Energy consumption is on the positive side of the expectation range.

IFOY Innovation Check

The RX 60-80 shows how the developers systematically thought about the possibility of equipping this vehicle class as a high-powered electric forklift when they drew up the original design. As a series-manufactured truck with electric drive system, the RX 60-80 is a real innovation in this performance class. This innovative concept is based on solutions that have been well thought through, such as the vertical-swivel battery cover facilitating access in the event of battery changes. As a result, the battery can easily be changed using a lift truck without the need for a suspension crane. Together with the short wheelbase of the truck, the far higher seat position on top of the big battery ensures good all-round visibility, enabling the driver to manoeuvre the machine in narrow spaces despite the high load capacity. The only shortcoming is in terms of access to the driver’s cabin in this high position above the chassis, partly due to the operating levers in the cabin, and this shortcoming must be weighed against the benefits of locating the cabin at this height.

On the whole, the RX 60-80 is far easier to drive than might be expected for a truck of this size. It therefore makes daily working life far easier for the driver, who does not have the feeling that he is operating a vehicle with such a high load capacity.

All in all, the RX 60-80 represents an innovative overall solution that meets all the requirements for a truck in this performance class.
