With the new operating concept for the Jungheinrich EFG S30s, Jungheinrich has introduced a completely reworked workstation to the market.
The working title ‘Operator in mind’ expresses the focus of the project very well. The focus was on the development of a standard, operator-oriented and intuitive workstation.
Constituent parts include the completely reworked armrest and a new operator dialogue system with a new control panel, colour display, USB port and the option to install hardware and software applications.
Associated with this improved specification is, once again, a noticeable improvement in the energy efficiency of the truck. Jungheinrich is the only manufacturer in the market environment to ensure two-shift operation on one battery charge. The foundation for this is the series-wide ‘Pure Energy’ technology concept.
In addition, Jungheinrich is introducing a completely new generation of masts with this specification improvement. One of the key characteristics of the new compact mast is its outstanding visibility which has been improved by up to 85 percent in comparison with the previous version.
Two-shift operation on one battery charge:
The experiences of the market launch and the initial feedback on the new Series 5 electric fork lift truck confirmed the idea of two-shift operation on one battery charge. By adjusting the truck software, it has been possible to make further progress in energy efficiency. This has made the desire for two-shift operation on one battery charge a reality. Jungheinrich guarantees its customers two-shift operation on one battery charge for the entire electric fork lift truck portfolio – and therefore also the EFG S30s.
Protection of employees:
Another primary goal of the project was the adaptation of the workstation to changing market conditions regarding operator requirements. The result is high demands on ergonomics, comfort and reliability. The development of the new workstation and operating concept as well as the new mast have ensured that this requirement has been taken into account.
Creating innovative solutions for future-oriented products:
The main focus of this project was the development of a flexible and adaptive product capable of reacting to trends and future market requirements or acting proactively in the market. The trend towards assistance systems and electronic aids is also gaining importance in the area of capital goods. The aim of an open and flexible system is to make it possible to quickly and simply introduce innovative solutions into the trucks.
The main benefits for the user are cost-effectiveness, ergonomics, reliability and security of investment thanks to flexibility.
Improving the specification of the Jungheinrich EFG S30s has set new standards with respect to energy efficiency. By avoiding changing batteries during two-shift operation, this results in a very low ‘Total Cost of Ownership’.
Improved ergonomics – sustainability for employee and employer:
The employee, who is in the truck for 6-8 hours a day, must be able to react quickly and safely to new situations at any time. This is only possible with optimum ergonomics which guarantee intuitive operation.
Irrespective of this, more and more employers are focusing on the consequences and resulting costs of poor work environments. The improved ergonomics and intuitive operation of the truck enable these circumstances to be proactively reduced and the consequences sustainably improved or minimised.
Safety and flexibility:
The implementation of the operator dialogue system enables the operator to equip the truck according to its individual criteria. The focus here is on the activation and deactivation of application-specific assistance systems which offer the operator support in every situation. Consequently, the truck is equipped for maximum safety. The benefit of this safety is that it can be used differently from operator to operator and can be adjusted to their own personal needs.

Jungheinrich introduced the overhauled EFG S series last year. Like the combustion-engined trucks in the S series, the electric forklifts are also equipped with increased load centre distance (600 mm instead of 500 mm) and come with a reinforced chassis and axles that can withstand the higher loads. The sturdy yet compact EFG S30s is therefore also suitable for heavy-duty operations in narrow spaces.
The spacious cab of the new EGF is easily accessible, also thanks to the extremely slim steering column, which is adjustable in height and angle on request. Jungheinrich has developed a totally new operating concept for the hydraulic functions, and the controls are integrated in the also new armrest. The operating levels are ergonomically designed, and both the left-hand (lifting, lowering, tilting) and right-hand levers are multi-functional. The new direction control switch is also easy to operate.
There is an additional storage compartment underneath the armrest, further increasing the range of storage options for the driver. The cabin is even equipped with a USB charging feature.
The key information such as driving mode, battery status and wheel position is shown on a modern, well-lit display (also new). Visibility from the cabin of the test truck was outstanding. The tie bars are of slimline design and intelligently positioned. Despite the wide-ranging mast accessories, the view through the newly developed mast is excellent.
Jungheinrich equips all its S series trucks with an automatic parking brake as standard. If the driver takes his foot off the gas, the vehicle brakes and the electric parking brake is automatically activated, even when the machine is on a ramp. This rules out unintentional forward or backward roll.
The EFG S30s in the test was equipped with an electrically operated side-on battery change system that greatly facilitates battery change. A button on the rear of the driver compartment activates a small rail on which the battery can then be pulled out. The system was developed for battery changing using cranes. Jungheinrich offers an alternative solution for the sideways changing of batteries using lifting gear and MHE vehicles.
In the IFOY test, the EFG S30s achieved above-average scores for productivity in driving mode 5. Productivity is below average in eco mode 3, however, but the forklift also uses considerably less energy in this mode. The truck shows impressive stability on fast bends and reacts with excellent predictability.
IFOY test verdict
Jungheinrich was thinking ahead when it developed the new EFG S30s. The machine is equipped with multiple innovative features and a well laid-out workplace. Performance is also good. As the reinforced truck is additionally fitted with a complete cabin, a heavy mast and a number of mounted accessories, the test results can be rated as “good”.

The EFG S30s boasts multiple innovations that combine to create a good counter balanced truck. In particular, the ergonomic design of the operator workplace together with the DUO-PILOT provides one of the basic preconditions for high efficiency and performance when working with the EFG S30s. This also includes features like the colour display for drive mode preselection and status information. The operating concept is rounded off by the user guidance of the driver information system. These features have major potential to become part of the standard equipment for these trucks in future, as can also be seen from their availability in the other test vehicle classes from Jungheinrich.
The device for automatic battery release is a further impressive feature, and one that has not been implemented in such a systematic way before. A similar system based on a simple mechanical concept has, however, been available from other manufacturers for some time.
Taken together, all these features result in an innovative overall solution that meets the full range of requirements for a future-safe counter balanced truck.
