Test report

The new ECE 220/225 further enhances the range of order pickers offered by Jungheinrich. The last series from the manufacturer was already the leader in its market segment, but the new ECE marks a further boost in performance capability. The new series is also “lithium-ion-ready”.

Thanks to the improved, internally developed electronics and software as well as the use of energy-efficient, high-powered AC engines, the new trucks are 10 percent more productive than their predecessors. The newcomer is 25 percent more energy-efficient (in the ECO+ version) while offering the same performance capability. Customers who prefer the 10 percent performance boost still profit from 5 percent lower energy consumption.

The low energy consumption with the ECO+ package is partly due to the new fork rollers. Instead of Vulkolan, Jungheinrich uses a material that has an even lower rolling resistance. The heavier the load, the greater the economy effect.

The new ECE order picker is “Li-ion-ready” and can therefore be operated not only with a conventional lead battery but also with a Jungheinrich-developed Li-ion battery. This Li-ion battery is far more energy-efficient and is also able to re-use the regenerative energy released during braking.

Irrespective of the choice of battery, the new ECE also has a more ergonomic operator platform that makes the day-to-day working life of the driver even more comfortable. The colour display is also new and shows all the important information. The driver can also select all driving modi via the display, as well as activating the ECO mode and changing various settings.

The JET Pilot steering wheel is steplessly height-adjustable and permits even more intuitive operation. It is equipped with a double-click feature for the automatic lifting of the forks, which means the driver can move off more quickly. The backrest is adjustable and also has an integral handle as well as a standing seat for easier travelling long distances.

The pushbuttons for forward and reverse motion in pedestrian mode are now arranged slightly more ergonomically at an angle of 45 degrees. There are multiple storage options. One conspicuous feature on the front of the truck is the DayLED lighting system, which enhances both safety and visibility.

The curve control feature that reduces vehicle speed in bends has been equipped with a load sensor. The level of speed reduction now depends not only on the angle of the steering wheel but also on the weight on the forks.

The IFOY test confirmed the boost in productivity and lower energy consumption claimed by Jungheinrich. When performing order picking tasks on short picking distances, the energy savings are even greater than specified by the manufacturer.

The Jungheinrich energy consumption figures are the lowest in the market. Productivity is above average, particularly if the pedestrian button option is used on high-intensity order picking routes.

IFOY test verdict

The Jungheinrich ECE has been completely overhauled but is still recognisably a Jungheinrich. The order picker provides increased performance with lower consumption. When performing work tasks, it is also more practical and intuitive than its predecessor. The vehicle marks a forward leap in the field of conventional order picking (either on-board or pedestrian-controlled via the buttons of the side of the truck). The addition of a remote system is the next logical step.

IFOY Innovation Check

The ECE 225 boasts numerous innovations, some of which are not directly visible. In particular, the powerful drive system combined with precision control characteristics makes for outstanding truck handling, also thanks to the reduced vehicle weight of the newly designed ECE 225. All in all, the functions and elements of the truck are selected and dimensioned in such a way that the user benefits from an ergonomically designed workplace both on the stand-in platform and when operating the truck from the side while order picking. Various drive modi are available to ensure adapted driving styles, and these modi are shown on a display which is anything but standard for this vehicle class and which also displays other important truck-related data.

One feature that is particularly worthy of mention is the innovative double-touch function on the control lever which automatically performs an initial lift of the forks so that the driver can then continue on his way without undue delay.

All these features combine to create an innovative overall solution that meets all the requirements for a future-safe horizontal order picker.
