The new Toyota Traigo 80 range of electric counterbalanced trucks excels in productivity, efficiency, safety, durability and comfort. Robust, compact and versatile, with load capacities from 2.0 up to 3.5 tons, these forklifts are convenient for both the occasional user and intense operations.
The productivity and efficiency are supported by the maintenance-free Toyota AC motors and the latest generation of controllers. These increase vertical and horizontal speed and reduce energy consumption by 20%. The trucks offer a range of battery capacities of up to 775Ah, including fast charging solutions. A customer survey has shown that this meets the demands of 85% of applications without battery change. For multiple-shift operations, the trucks offer various battery change methods.
The Toyota Traigo 80 has a compact mast design, optimised hydraulic layout and an improved controller cooling system. It brings up to 20% more energy efficiency than the previous model, meaning 20% longer operational time.
The standard Toyota System of Active Stability (SAS) with Rear Stabiliser for more lateral stability, Mast Control for safer handling of load at height, Steering Synchroniser aligning steering wheel and rear drive wheels provides for safer material handling. Safety is further enhanced with the excellent all-round visibility. To reduce driver fatigue, Toyota Traigo 80 features a comfortable driver compartment that can be adapted to the operator’s preferences and spacious modern cabins for outdoor work.
The customers benefit from increased productivity with the new Toyota Traigo 80-volt truck: it raises the driving speed (up to 20 km/h), the lift speed and the acceleration. It also runs up to 20% longer than its predecessor and is among the most energy efficient trucks in its class. The compact design makes these forklifts easily manoeuvrable in narrow aisles.
For multiple-shift operations requiring battery change, the Traigo 80 offers a choice of battery management solutions. The battery can be lifted out with a crane as standard. For sideways battery change we offer built-in sliders for electric battery extraction or fork pockets under the battery.
The multi-function display built into the dashboard is another innovative feature. Key information such as battery discharge, steering wheel position, and drive speed is available at a glance. All switches to activate lights and other functions are integrated in the same display for quick access.

It offers options such as speed and acceleration control with load at height, load weight indicator and height selector allowing the driver to be safer, more confident, and more productive.
The truck is designed to ease serviceability and be more environmentally conscious. The Traigo 80 comes with maintenance-free motors, controllers and wet disc brakes as standard, and with eco-friendly LED lights as an option. All key components can be easily accessed, enabling fast service. Also, the longer operating time eliminates the need for a second battery in 85% of the applications. The trucks are also 99% recoverable, which contributes to lowering the environmental impact.
The Traigo 80 aims to improve the driveability and durability for customers. The trucks have a solid all-metal design and all the comfort that leads to better performance: large step size for easy access to the truck, cabin options for all weather conditions, adjustable armrest and intuitive minilevers, steering synchroniser for more ergonomic driving position, speed reduction in cornering for increased truck control, to name but few features.
Drivers of the Toyota Traigo 80 will experience the comfort of being behind the wheel. Thanks to the operator compartment with easy on-and-off and comfortable driving position, the operator will feel less fatigue during long working hours. When driving backwards frequently, the driver can even opt for a swivel seat that swivels right and provides a more ergonomic driving position that reduces back strain.
The all-round visibility forwards, backwards, upwards greatly increase the level of safety while manoeuvring. This is also secured thanks to the Toyota System of Active Stability (SAS) which reduces the risk of tip over and goods damage and makes the positioning of the forks quicker and safer.
Customers benefit from the higher energy efficiency and fast charging possibilities. These new models need 20% less energy for the same level of productivity. With the Traigo 80 trucks, 85% of applications do not need battery change, reducing the time, cost and effort necessary to charging or changing the battery.
Toyota launched the 8FBMT25 series, better known as Traigo 80, last year. New electronics and a more efficient layout of components were designed to make the new electric 2.5-ton truck from the Toyota stable 20 percent more efficient than its predecessor. The IFOY test confirms that Toyota has succeeded in this mission.
The Traigo 80 has a sturdy and solid look, although the design is neither exciting nor progressive. Whether battery cover, side panels or entrance – nearly all the elements are made of solid steel. The plastic components like the dashboard are equally robust and impact-proof.
The newcomer has a stronger engine than its predecessor. Together with the new layout of the components, this ensures minimal energy losses. Through-mast visibility is also improved: the completely redesigned and broader mast (lifting height 3,300 mm) provides the driver with a clear view of the fork ends. The mast segments are clever put together, saving a great deal of space, thereby creating a good line of sight trough and along the mast.
The mast speed is fast and can be controlled with maximum precision via the mini-levers on the right-hand armrest. Mast dampening is good and also active in the lowest fork position. In addition, the redesigned protective roof makes for improved visibility. The no-nonsense design and large openings ensure excellent lines of sight, making the truck ideal for work at heights. The entry to the truck is relatively high at 540 mm but can still be described as comfortable. At the same time, the step-up is low and safe. The contrasting colour of the nonslip grating means that the step is also easily visible when exiting the truck. The floor panel is spacious and free of obstacles, and all the edges around the entry and the battery compartment have smooth corners. The Traigo 80 cabin is practical and well laid out. The seat behind the steplessly adjustable steering column is solidly mounted and ergonomically designed, as are the armrests. In addition, Toyota has equipped the column with a memory function so that it can easily be reset to the default position.
Thanks to the steering synchroniser, the steering wheel is always in the ideal position to ensure safety of operation. In addition, the test truck provided all other benefits of the SAS systems (System of Active Stability). Toyota has been supplying this system for some time now. Other SAS features include rear axle locking in bends and automatic tilt angle limitation with raised forks and when the forks are automatically horizontally positioned during tilting. All in all, the SAS almost always guarantees a high level of safety and productivity, which means it further enhances the already dependable Traigo 80.
The IFOY test also confirmed this productivity. In all drive modi – H (High Performance), P (Performance) and S (Standard) – the truck is more energy-efficient than average for its class. Toyota is therefore true to its word when it claims that the Traigo 80 has become around 20 percent more efficient.
Summary
The new Traigo 80 from Toyota is a sturdy and easy-to-operate forklift truck. The unique SAS also gives this Toyota truck a genuine USP and makes it safer and more predictable. The productivity values are fair average, and energy consumption is lower than the market average.

The newly developed control system for the Toyota AC motor achieves a driving speed of up to 20 kmh on empty runs and up to19 kmh on load trips. At the same time, the lifting speed has been increased to 0.68 m/s without and 0.48 m/s with load. In addition, the optimised motor control concept reduces overall energy consumption by up to 20%, which means that the battery needs to be changed less frequently.
The battery can be changed not only using the conventional crane method but also by integrating sliding rails for electric battery change systems or entry pockets.
The setting options for the various performance parameters on the multifunction display and the different pedal layout options permit tailoring of the cabin to meet the individual preferences of the driver.
There is also a range of different operating options for the hydraulic functions.
Assessment of innovation
The energy savings of up to 20% enabled by the use of the new control unit with a simultaneous increase in driving and lifting speeds are key developments in the endeavour to enhance energy efficiency and therefore keep operating costs constant in the long term. The option of customised adjustment of the performance parameters and pedal arrangement to suit the operator is in line with the general trend towards individualisation.
In the main, tried-and-tested technical elements already used in other fields of industry were used to implement these measures.
All in all, the truck is a systematic further development of this truck category based on the use of known technologies from other areas.
