Description

STILL presents the RX 70-50, the successor model to the R 70 series. Instead of focusing on absolute peak values in an individual discipline, this forklift is dimensioned exactly so as to create an optimum overall picture from the very wide variety of performance requirements. The basic idea of the new internal combustion truck with a load capacity of five tons is optimum goods handling performance based on a combination of power, precision, ergonomics, compactness, safety and environmental responsibility that is unique.

Innovations

The RX 70-50 enables high operating speeds with low energy consumption due to the combination of a powerful industrial motor and the proven diesel-electric drive system. In addition to the Blue-Q energy efficiency program and diesel-electric drive, the RX 70 offers another unique advantage: the intelligent drive controller. This forward-looking technology reduces fuel consumption and, in combination with the optional Tempomat, ensures long-distance driving that is as relaxed as it is economical. Moreover, the truck’s enormous power can be put into practice effectively through the precise, sensitive steering and five selectable driving programs.
Moreover, the new forklift makes a convincing impression with its ergonomically mature, functional vehicle design. Aisle widths of less than five metres are achievable thanks to the vehicle’s width of under 1.50 metres – which guarantees optimum use of the available warehouse space. Ecological responsibility is another facet of optimum goods handling performance. In spite of its high goods turnover performance, the RX 70-50 allows the environment to breath a sign of relief: it significantly outperforms the exhaust emission limit values of Directive 97/68/EC Stage 3b. As the only forklift in its class, the RX 70-50 achieves such low emission values only by means of an oxidation catalyst – the use of a soot particulate filter is unnecessary thanks to a completely newly developed 2.9 litre Deutz diesel engine.

Market relevance

The design concept phase of the RX 70-50 focused on several characteristic features of an industrial truck. During the development, great attention was paid to compliance with the exhaust emission law 97/68 E Stage 3b. The aim here was to outperform the statutory requirements without a diesel particulates filter.
Of course ist was also thought about the driver at the same time: starting with a generously designed, clearly visible entrance step, via a functional workplace design with optimum adjustment ranges for all the controls and a wide variety of equipment options to the best values for vibration stresses on the human body. This all increases operator comfort, provides optimum conditions for fatigue-free working, and prevents injury to health.
The aim with this truck was not just to be particularly outstanding in a single aspect and to design a forklift with the biggest engine power, but to market a counterbalanced truck that sets a new standard for efficiency. And due to the diesel-electric drive unit, STILL also shows the one of the lowest fuel consumption with the RX 70-50. The targeted use of recyclable construction materials ensures resource-conserving reutilisation after the forklift reaches the end of its life.

Customer benefits

Due to its unique diesel-electric propulsion system, the RX 70-50 enables high operating speed combined with low fuel consumption. This power can also be put into practice effectively as a result of the precise, sensitive control of the traction drive system and working hydraulics. The maximum driving speed together with the acceleration and braking capabilities can also be individually customised through the five driving programs. Acceleration and braking require only the operation of the foot throttle. When the driver takes his foot off the accelerator, the vehicle is braked electrically and thus entirely wear-free. The automatic braking provides additional security against unintended rolling away on an uneven floor surface or on ramps. Like all of STILL’s forklifts, the “big one” is also characterised by consistent, sensitive, precise driving behaviour. This enables the driver to work accurately and productively. An extensive selection of cabin equipment, the optimum arrangement and design of all the controls, and a roomy, vibration-free, soundproofed driver’s cab ensure fatigue-free, comfortable working at all times. Goods handling performance is far more than pure engine performance. Power, precision, ergonomics, compactness, safety and environmental responsibility – only the optimum interplay of these six aspects ensures maximum goods handling performance. The combination of the performance capability of man and machine is implemented in an ideal way with the RX 70-50.

Test report

Still presented the new RX 70 family at the beginning of 2013 as the successor to the R 70 series. Thanks to a unique combination of powerful, industrial engines and diesel-electric drive system, the new trucks are a byword for high performance and low fuel consumption. The Still RX 70-50 is nominated for the IFOY Award.

The truck is equipped with a very spacious cabin. Operation is extremely convenient and precise. Together with the large window in the protective roof, the intelligent arrangement of the hoses and chains ensures a good view of the load and the surrounding area. Despite the spacious design and strong performance, the 5-ton truck is compact and agile.

The RX 70-50 has five drive programs, all of which permit the adjustment of speed, acceleration and braking power to individual needs and requirements. The high precision of acceleration and braking response makes for convenient and safe driving. The brake pedal only needs to be operated in emergency situations. As soon as the driver takes his foot off the gas, the truck brakes electrically and therefore with zero wear. This feature also prevents accidental roll-on on uneven surfaces or slopes.

In addition to the tried-and-tested Blue-Q energy efficiency concept and the proven diesel-electric drive, the new RX 70 models have a unique advantage: among other things, the intelligent drive control system ensures that the speed remains constant even when the rpms are reduced by 25 percent, thereby achieving significantly lower fuel consumption. In combination with the optional cruise control, the RX 70-50 is a byword for relaxed and energy-efficient operation, particularly over long distances.

The truck stays within the legally admissible emission limits (Directive 97/68/EC, Stage IIIB) and is the only forklift in its class to achieve this performance with just one oxidation catalytic converter. The newly developed 2.9-litre Deutz diesel engine also obviates the need for a diesel particulate filter.

The use of maintenance-free and sealed components like electric and nonwearing threephase drive systems and oil-cooled disc brakes reduces maintenance needs to a minimum. As a result, the RX 70-50 only needs servicing every 1,000 operating hours or once a year.

Summary

The Still RX 70-50 offers outstanding and reliable handling. The forklift is easy to operate, and the handling characteristics are extremely precise despite its size. Although the combined weight of the truck and the load is considerably higher, the performance is better than the average for the 3-ton class. It was not possible to compare energy consumption, as no machines have yet been tested in this category. Compared to the 3-ton series, however, the Still RX 70-50 is relatively fuel and energy-efficient. The recommended version is the truck with the Blue-Q system activated, as this achieves further considerable fuel savings in the order of 12 percent without any impact on productivity.

IFOY Innovation Check

In order to achieve this aim, Still has developed and installed an intelligent drive control system for the selected diesel-electric drive concept. The company has also used a totally new industrial diesel engine from an outside supplier. All these measures together ensure that Still can meet the legal emission limits with just one oxidation catalytic converter and without the need for an additional diesel particulate filter.

The essential element in this innovation is what Still describes as the proven diesel-electric drive unit that is already part of the company’s portfolio. The adapted control system is said to exploit the benefits of this drive unit to the full. This “intelligent” drive control unit reduces fuel consumption via the adapted control of the energy-consuming traction and lifting drives, interacting with the assistant systems like the optional cruise control to achieve the claimed reduction in energy consumption. The truck also profits from the action of another assistant system, the switchable “Blue-Q” efficiency mode (blue button) which is already used in existing Still MHE units. This system is designed to intelligently optimise the drive characteristic and reduce energy consumption in individual functional processes by reducing process speeds wherever possible – but without resulting in longer lifting or driving times that would slow down the overall working process.

Still says that the newly developed truck not only saves energy but can also be deployed more effectively overall thanks to the assistant features in combination with other measures such as the high-precision and highly responsive control system, the selectable drive modes and the ergonomic design.

Assessment of innovation

From an overall perspective, Still is continuing its established development strategy: the newly designed truck uses Still’s proven diesel-electric drive concept in combination with a new engine and an (unspecified) intelligent drive control system. This enables Still to achieve what it sees as being the paramount goal of compliance with the 97/68 EC Stage 3b emission directive, meeting the legal requirements without the need for a diesel particulate filter.

The key ergonomic aspects of this truck concern the further development of proven concepts to improve the working conditions for the driver/operator.
