Description

The Tergo®-series is a reach truck family of 5 different unique models in 8 capacities, covering from medium to heavy duty segment, 1200kg to 2500kg and lift heights 3,3m up to 12,1m.
The Tergo® design, is the result of an extensive investigation of customer requirements, Customers clearly request a design suitable not only for all operators, but also warehouse- and logistic managers. In other words, a Personal truck. An ideal workplace eliminates fatigue and supports drivers to stay focused for their whole shift. The truck needs to fit not only short or tall operator, but also provide an ergonomically good design, for beginners to quickly perform well and safe, while experienced operators to find challenge to perform with excellence. Warehouse and logistics managers´requirements of safety, uptime, and low maintenance cost are fulfilled by a truck designed with a heavy duty chassis, powertrain, hydraulic systems as well as advanced safety systems. However, highest productivity and lowest cost are reached when operators work without risk of strain injuries, i.e. in ergonomically well-designed trucks.
Tergo® is designed with a high degree of modularisation, offering possibilities for extensive customer adaptation and a minimum number of spare parts and service hours required. Together with extensive endurance and long-term tests during the development, Tergo® gives the customer the highest First-time-fix rate and low cost of ownership.

Innovations

Tergo® UMS has market leading performance. Highest drive and lift speed combined with a highly sensitive control system allow quick and safe pallet handling due to S3 (Stability Support System) controlling the speed of the truck, mast, reach and tilt functions. S3 is specified to be a bench mark system, reducing the risk by human errors when using a reach truck:

Dynamic cornering control – DCC, enabling high and safe cornering speed. Simultaneous control of three hydraulic functions. Ergologic joystick additionally improves the ergonomics for the driver.
ProVision Concept – Offers maximum visibility, through and beside the mast, is created through a minimum of hoses in the mast which contributes good vision at all heights. The overhead guard and pillars designed to provide excellent visibility.
Tergo® is designed for optimized productivity and ergonomics and has very low full body vibrations and noise levels.
Tilting seat is adjustable six different ways – length, weight, backrest angle, inflatable lumbar support, neck rest height and angle. The extra-long seat design supports the thighs. The floor is electrical height adjustable (70mm), providing exceptional comfort.
Large and correct angled pedals provides perfect feet position. A low step-in low, 390mm and long handle allows all operators to easily enter Tergo®.
Other Innovations: ASR ensures traction in slippery conditions, LAS helps to find the right pallet height, and the start-up process is easy with SmartStart.

Market relevance

Personalization: Tergo® offers best in class combination of 350 individual performance settings and extensive possibilities to perfectly fit the truck, to the operator and the operation. The Tergo®-range contains of models with two narrow chassis, two normal chassis and two with a wide chassis.
The Tergo® reach truck series offers two steering concepts, two different hydraulic control units, two direction controls and two different tilt systems. With three different battery change systems together with six different battery sizes all applications are possible.

Efficient Ergonomics: In the development process, extensive research of body movements and adapted body postures in a reach truck were used. The goal was to allow operators to adjust their working environment, to promote the driver’s motion, reducing the risk of strain injuries. Research studies of ergonomics made by Chalmers University of Technology shows that Tergo® offers better ergonomic postures than competitor’s reach trucks do.

Emotion: A lot of effort in the design phase was spent on optimizing the soft factors as the feel in control- and safety systems. Other factors leading to fatigue, as noise and vibration are greatly reduced. Everything leads to outstanding comfort. Hard facts are easy to measure, but to measure what makes a truck enjoyable is impossible. Throughout the project, operators’ requests and impressions were fed back to the designers. As a result, the operators love Tergo®.

Customer benefits

Two main features in combination are crucial to achieve efficient ergonomics in a side-seated truck:

The position of the mini steering wheel, located on a floating armrest.
The special seat with a tapered, concave-shaped backrest (patent pending) and head rest, permits the operator to turn the upper torso and adopt an optimal position in both the driving and stacking direction. This reduces the dangerous angle between the cheek and shoulder, hence minimizes the risk of strain injury caused by working in a fixed, strained neck posture. Additionally the backrest tilts back 18 degrees reducing the neck angle when working on high heights. Force applied to tilt depends on the operator´s weight (patent pending).
A confident and relaxed operator is safer and quicker due to less strain. The operator requires fewer pauses and the productivity increase. As the total cost of operation, TCO, mostly contains of cost for the operator, the productivity has leverage on the total cost. The overall performance is outstanding. Even small improvements in performance, used in multiple handling cycles 24-7,365 days a year have great impact on the total output. The UMS Tergo® work cycle is between 3 – 11% quicker than the competitors, no account for increased performance of the driver due to better ergonomics. Rigorous tests and a modular design, is a guarantee for highest quality and durability, even in the toughest environments. A reach truck, very appreciated everywhere it is used.

Test report

Atlet launched its new reach truck series in the spring of 2011. It consists of five models with capacities of 1,200 to 2,500 kg and lift heights of 7,250 to 12,100 millimetres. The Tergo UMS also comes with an unprecedented range of optional features and a large number of chassis widths.

Features and test report

The Tergo’s step tread makes getting in and out safe and simple. The excellent seat has a wide variety of settings, with a slim back that makes it very easy for the driver to turn round. The truck has a mini steering wheel on the folding left armrest. A larger wheel is available as an optional extra, mounted on the frame rather than the armrest. The cabin floor height is ergonomically adjustable by up to 70 millimetres to suit the driver.

Atlet has made further improvements to sightlines in the new models. The roof pillars are cleverly designed, the lifting arms clearly visible, and the horizontal roof sections angled to improve the upward view. Only the front three struts are inclined, and the rest are vertical.

The truck is ready for use as soon as you enter your PIN. The new display shows the drivewheel position and battery and parking brake status, and the service hours and time are also permanently shown.

The truck has 180-degree steering as standard, and the one we tested had the optional 360-degree version. Other options include lift height display, side shift, and a central position for the tilt angle. The Tergo offers a choice of hands-free direction control (a combined speed and steering pedal) and traditional thumb-switched steering, in which your forearm rests comfortably on the upholstered adjustable armrest, providing very good wrist support. The unit is operated with the right hand using a joystick.

The hydraulic functions operated much as we expected, and the test truck had a high-quality, user-friendly ErgoLogic joystick, which is also used to change direction. The mast is well dampened, and the slow stop feature in the highest lift position improves driver safety and comfort.

Summary

The adjustable floor height, wide range of individual seat and armrest settings and modern display are the Atlet Tergo’s biggest innovations. The cabin and seat shock absorbers provide a very high level of comfort, but there is slightly too much play, for example when the mast moves or while negotiating bends. The small steering wheel on the left armrest takes some getting used to, and the test team feels that a midsize steering wheel is generally more user-friendly.
